Gladiators Weekly Update
October 31, 2004 - ECHL (ECHL)
Atlanta Gladiators News Release
What are the odds? The Gladiators dropped their third consecutive 4-3 shootout decision on Saturday night as they battled the Mississippi Sea Wolves at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum. The Gladiators first five games of the regular season all ended in a 4-3 final with the Gladiators posting a 2-0-3 record. Barring Kris Goodjohn's empty net goal against the Greenville Grrrowl on Sunday night, the Gladiators were 7 seconds away from starting the season with every game ending in a 4-3 final. Four of the team's first six games have ended in a shootout.
Record Watch: Gladiators captain Cam Brown added four more minutes to his penalty minute total in Saturday's 4-3 shootout loss in Mississippi. Brown needs just 5 more minutes to break the all time ECHL penalty minute record of 2,253 PIM's currently held by Brian Goudie who played for four ECHL teams from 1993-2003. Brown is also creeping up on the All-Time ECHL games played record held by Rod Taylor with 678 games played. Brown needs just 23 games played to break the record and should break the record when the Gladiators travel to Greenville on December 30th.
Record Crowd: The Gladiators crowd of 8,586 at Friday's regular season home opener against Augusta set a new all time team attendance record. The Gladiators previous record of 7,638 was set on January 17th last year. The team's all time attendance mark of 8,442 set during the team's inaugural season in Mobile against the Birmingham Bulls on January 13, 1996 was also shattered during the Gladiators regular season home opener on Friday.
In overtime: The Mobile Mysticks set the ECHL mark for most overtime/shootout losses in a season with 18 during the team's final year in Mobile. The Gladiators have already tallied 3 this season, just 6 games into the year. The Gladiators share first in that category in the ECHL with the Johnstown Chiefs and Columbia Inferno. The fewest overtime/shootout losses that the Gladiators organization posted during one season is 2 during the 1999-2000 season.
