San Diego Gulls News Release
ANCHORAGE, Alaska â Another standing room only crowd filled Sullivan Arena Saturday night to see NHL star Scott Gomez. But similar to Friday, his teammates did most of the work en route to a 4-1 victory over the San Diego Gulls.
Gomez, the NHL co-leader in assists last season, notched two helpers Saturday. However, stingy goaltending by Peter Aubry and two second-period goals led the way for the Alaska Aces, who have taken both games so far in the three-game weekend series against San Diego (1-2-1).
Alaska (2-2-0) drew first blood 9:50 into the game on Mike Lee's first goal of the season. Jordan Cameron had the first chance, which was turned aside by Mathieu Chouinard. The San Diego netminder couldn't control the rebound however and Lee punched it home on his backhand.
The Gulls tied it exactly one minute later on Billy Tibbetts' third tally of the season. Mark Pederson was skating down the left wing and whipped a cross-ice feed to Tibbetts, who roofed a wrist shot over Aubry's out-stretched glove. Darren Clark, promoted to San Diego's top line, also earned an assist on the play.
Mike Scott regained the lead for the Aces 5:56 into the second period, converting on another rebound left by Chouinard. Mike Jones took a pass from Mike Clarke and unleashed a shot from the left circle that was stopped. The puck caromed off Chouinard's pad and right to Scott, who easily tapped it into the net.
Ryan Bast made it a 3-1 game at the 18:33 mark of the second, ripping in a slap shot from the left wing circle. Fellow blue-liner Ryan Moren fed the point to a wide-open Bast, who walked in uncontested and buried his first goal of the year. Gomez also garnered an assist, his second in as many nights.
Moments later Tibbetts went on a breakaway with a golden chance to pull the Gulls back within one. Aubry, however, was equal to the task and denied Tibbetts' backhand attempt.
That proved to be one of the final grade-A opportunities for San Diego as Aubry and the rest of the Alaska defense shut the door the remainder of the game.
Scott sealed it with his second goal of the game â and season â at the 17:47 mark of the third period. Gomez fed a streaking Scott, who faked a pass and snapped a wrister that beat Chouinard high blocker-side.
