Gladiators grind Lynx 8-2
February 25, 2005 - ECHL (ECHL)
Augusta Lynx News Release
It was just one of those nights for the Augusta Lynx in an 8-2 road loss to the Gwinnett Gladiators on Friday night.
Gwinnett jumped on the Lynx just 1:21 into the first period when Kris Goodjohn won a draw back to Rick Emmett, who fired a puck at Lynx starter Matus Kostur that Goodjohn would redirect into the Augusta net for a 1-0 lead. It almost seemed like déjà vu when at 3:50 Jim Jackson fired a shot from the point that beat Kostur after a draw win from Peter Flache to make it 2-0. Jason Saal was inserted into the hockey game at that point, but was greeted in similar fashion to his counterpart as Chris Durno scored a goal off a Kris Goodjohn shot at 6:50 to make it 3-0. With Kostur reinserted to the Lynx net following that goal, Jeff Campbell scored on a 2-on-2 rush with an assist from Brad Schell, plus a helper from Mike Vigilante. Rounding out the first period scoring, Gwinnett marked just five seconds into their first power play chance when Randy Dagenais scored on a point shot from Campbell to make it 5-0 after the first period of play.
Two goals in the second period would also belong to Gwinnett, starting at 8:52 when Peter Flache scored from Cam Brown and Mike Stathopoulos to make it 6-0, followed by another Gladiators' power play goal at 18:38 form Joe Bourne to make it 7-0. Emmett and Stathopoulos picked up the assists on the goal to help Gwinnett to a 2-for-2 mark with the man advantage after two periods of play.
Just one minute into the third period it became an 8-0 lead for Gwinnett on Dagenais' second goal of the evening from Stathopoulos. Augusta would manage to rally back with a pair of goals 39 seconds apart, the first from Colt King at 11:14, the second from Louis Goulet at 11:53. Regan Darby recorded an assist in his first game with the club on Goulet's goal for an 8-2 final.
Adam Berkhoel made 37 saves to earn the win for Gwinnett, while Kostur stopped 36 in the loss for Augusta.
The same two teams are back at it again Saturday night in Augusta at 7:35 pm on Petsch Respiratory Services Koozy giveaway night. Tickets are available through the Lynx office at (706) 724-4ICE, all TicketMaster locations, or on line at www.TicketMaster.com.
