Atlanta Gladiators News Release
The Gladiators came one goal short as they fell 4-3 to the Kalamazoo Wings on Wednesday in Kalamazoo. Gwinnett was able to take a 1-0 lead into the first period, and had to fight back from being down 2-1, but earned a very important point in the American League standings.
A spirited affair in the first period saw the Gladiators jump out to the one goal lead, although it took nearly the full period. While Dan Sullivan was in the penalty box for taking a hooking penalty that probably saved a goal against, the Gladiators rallied in support of one of their captains. Sam Roberts fired a loose puck around the boards and Matt Francis was able to beat Louis Liotti to the puck. Francis stormed up the leftwing boards and found Michael Forney in front of the net. Forney tapped the puck under the arm of Wings Goaltender Ryan Nie to give Gwinnett the lead.
The second period showed none of the stalwart defense of the first period. Darryl Lloyd struck just 1:18 into the period. After getting a quick break on goal, Danny Taylor made the initial stop on Lloyd. Lloyd tracked down the rebound and pushed it between the legs of Taylor to tie the game at one goal apiece.
Just 3:10 later the Wings would take the first lead of the game. Mathieu Curadeau won an offensive zone draw for the Wings back to Jon Landry. Landry blasted a shot and Trent Daavettila put the rebound home give the Wings a 2-1 lead.
The Gladiators struck back just a couple of minutes later when Sean Hurley collected his first point for Gwinnett. Michael Forney and Tim Miller connected on a give-and-go in the right corner. Hurley recognized a delayed penalty being called on Kalamazoo, and took the opportunity to crash the front of the net. Forney found Hurley in front of the net and Hurley tipped it home to knot the game back up at two.
Dan Sullivan regained the lead for Gwinnett while on the Applebees power play at the 12:31 mark of the second period. Scott Mifsud and Adam Berti cycled the puck in the right corner, and Berti found Sullivan wide open in the slot. Sullivan quickly one-timed the pass through the five-hole of Nie, and the Gladiators gained a 3-2 advantage.
Kalamazoo evened the score before the end of the second period when Sam Ftorek scored on a breakaway coming out of the penalty box. Ftorek made one quick move and fired a shot just past the glove of Taylor, tying the contest up at three.
No scoring occurred in the third period, bringing the game into overtime, where the Wings were able to earn the extra point. Jon Landry found a puck at the top of the slot just along the blue line, and blasted a shot through the pads of Danny Taylor and into the net. Gwinnett earned one point in the standings with the overtime loss.
The Gladiators fell to 25-23-4-2 with the loss, and the Wings improved to 28-17-4-3 with the win.
