Gladiators Crushed By Checkers

January 3, 2010 - ECHL (ECHL)
Atlanta Gladiators News Release

A close game after one period of play quickly turned into a blowout as the Checkers stormed past Gwinnett 5-2. An early first period goal by Charlotte saw them take a one goal lead into the first intermission, but a 4 goal outburst in the second all but put the game away before the third period was underway.

The Checkers wasted no time getting on the scoreboard in the first period. Just 2:03 into the game, Randy Rowe fired a puck on net that found its way through heavy traffic. Danny Taylor made a couple of stops on the play, but eventually Mike Harder pushed the loose puck past Taylor for the 1-0 lead.

The Gladiators mustered a total of 8 shots in the period, while the Checkers fired 13 of their own.

The situation did not improve for the Gladiators in the 2nd period. 2:29 into the period, Charlotte scored their first of 4 goals. After Michel Leveille won an offensive zone draw, T.J. Reynolds fired a shot from the right point towards the Gladiator net. Leveille tipped the shot just past Danny Taylor increasing the Charlotte lead to 2-0.

Randy Rowe was the next Checker to strike in the game. After an interference penalty to Sam Roberts, the Checkers established the offensive zone on the power play and Rowe received a pass from Julian Brouillette across the top of the crease and he put it home increasing the lead to 3-0. Harder also received an assist on the goal,

Aaron Slattengren added to the Checkers with a shot that just managed to flutter past Danny Taylor. Slattengren received a pass from Tyler Doig into the slot, and his one-timer floated past Taylor for a 4-0 lead,

The Checkers added their 4th goal of the period at the 12:11 mark. With David Brown in net to replace Taylor, Reynolds once again fired a shot from the top of the slot after an offensive zone faceoff win. The shot bounced off traffic and Brown's shoulder and into the back of the net. Charlotte took the 5-0 lead into the second intermission.

The Gladiators appeared to finally find their legs in the third period. At the 11:03 mark, Pat Galivan got the Gladiators on the board. After a nice feed from Sam Roberts, Galivan was able to stick-handle around Miika Wiikman and tucked a shot inside the left post to break Wiikman,s shutout bid.

Michael Forney would add one more goal with just 10 seconds remaining in the game. Forney attempted a shot from the top of the slot, but had it blocked by the defense right back onto his stick. Forney fired again and picked the top right corner for Gwinnett's second goal of the night.

The score would finish with the Checkers getting the 5-2 victory. The Gladiators went 0-3 on the Applebees powerplay while the Checkers were 1-2 with the man-advantage. Charlotte improved to 17-10-3-1 overall and Gwinnett fell to 15-12-2-2.
