Alaska Aces News Release

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - The Alaska Aces rallied from a 2-0 deficit to force a shootout, but could not deny Victoria its 12th straight win, 3-2, in front of 3,652 Sunday at Sullivan Arena.

Alaska (13-17-3 overall) now sits at 2-1-1 on its current 10-game homestand heading into tomorrow night's series finale against the Salmon Kings at 7:15 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on KFQD 750 AM, with the Peanut Farm Pre-Game Show beginning at 7:00 p.m. The Aces swept Victoria in a three-game series played in Anchorage to open the 2009-10 season, but the Salmon Kings have responded with four straight wins head-to-head in a span of eight days.

For the second time in as many nights, Randall Gelech opened the scoring for the visitors, notching his third goal of the series and 10th of the year at 6:58 of the first period.

Chad Painchaud, who had a goal and two assists in Victoria's 6-2 win over Alaska Saturday, made a steal and went coast-to-coast to beat newly minted Aces starter Frank Doyle on a breakaway at 7:14 of the second period, giving the 'Kings a 2-0 advantage.

Alaska captain Scott Burt responded with his first goal in 13 games dating to Nov. 28, a wrist shot off the rush that beat Victoria goalie David Shantz top shelf and reduced the gap to 2-1 with 7:53 left in the middle frame. For the second time in four games, Bryan Miller delivered the game-tying goal in the third period, scoring on a wrister from the slot at 1:52. The Aces dominated the final 20 minutes, out-shooting the visitors 12-4, but Shantz survived the onslaught and added three more saves in overtime.

Wes Goldie scored in the first round of the shootout for the Salmon Kings, but Alexandre Imbeault scored his fourth goal in as many attempts this season to pull Alaska even in the third round. The skills competition was settled in the fifth, when Hamilton beat Doyle and Shantz stopped Colin Hemingway. The Aces had won 15 of their last 18 shootouts coming into Sunday night.
