Alaska Aces News Release
ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Chad Painchaud had a goal and two assists as Victoria built a 6-0 lead on its way to an 11th consecutive win, 6-2 over Alaska before 4,517 Saturday at Sullivan Arena.
After 30 minutes the Salmon Kings led 5-0 and had out-shot the Aces 18-4. The two teams meet again tomorrow evening at 5:05 p.m. and again Monday night at 7:15 p.m. Both games will be broadcast live on KFQD 750 AM, with the Peanut Farm Pre-Game Show beginning 15 minutes prior to face-off. Alaska swept Victoria in a three-game series played in Anchorage to open the 2009-10 season but has lost the last three meetings, including a pair in Canada last Sunday and Monday.
Randall Gelech opened the barrage against Aces goaltender Scott Reid at 3:34 of the first period, scoring on a rebound of a Painchaud shot. Painchaud followed by punching home a rebound of a Mike Hamilton shot at 12:21, and the Salmon Kings sailed into the dressing room having limited the hosts to one shot, the first time an ECHL club had managed only one shot on goal in the first period of a game all season.
Former Ace Olivier Filion increased the gap to 3-0 with a perfectly timed tip-in on his backhand at 2:53 of the second period, and two minutes later Wes Goldie flipped a loose rebound over Reid for the first of two power play goals for the Salmon Kings. The second came on a drive from Jimmy Sharrow from the high slot with 12:11 still remaining in the middle frame.
Gelech's second goal, assisted by Painchaud, came 5:42 into the third period and pushed the margin to 6-0. Alaska avoided being shut out for the second time this season when Jason Ryznar shoveled home a rebound of a Bryan Miller shot on his backhand with 10:46 remaining in the game. A John Lammers power play goal, his 17th in 20 ECHL contests this season, with 6:31 left completed the scoring. The Aces were out-shot 25-20.
Former Aces head coach Davis Payne, who went 185-75-28 (.691) in his four years behind the bench with Alaska and won the 2006 Kelly Cup, was named head coach of the St. Louis Blues (Alaska's NHL affiliate) early Saturday. The 2006-07 ECHL Coach of the Year, who had been in his second season as head coach of the Aces AHL affiliate in Peoria prior to his promotion, lost his debut, 6-3, against the Chicago Blackhawks.
