Atlanta Gladiators News Release
The Gwinnett Gladiators became the third team this season in the ECHL to reach 100 or more points in a season as they ground out a 1-0 victory over the Augusta Lynx on Thursday night in Augusta. Gwinnett now has 101 points on the season as Las Vegas and Alaska have already moved past the century mark this season. The Wranglers have posted 106 points while the Aces have 104 on the year. With the win, the Gladiators improve to 47-13-7 on the season. Guillaume Desbiens broke a scoreless tie in the third period lifting the puck over the leg of Augusta netminder Mike Wall 14:34 into the period.
Jon Awe broke up an Augusta rush into the Gwinnett zone and moved the puck up ice to Brad Schell who fed Desbiens for the tally. For Desbiens, it was his 33rd goal of the season tying the Gladiators team record originally set by Kevin Doell during the Gladiators inaugural 2003-04 season.
Augusta out-chanced the Gladiators during the opening period with more power play chances while out shooting Gwinnett by a 13-2 margin. The Gladiators registered their second shot of the game with just 15 seconds left in the period as Guillaume Desbiens muscled to the front of the net but couldn't capitalize on the chance.
The second period ended as it began with both teams still unable to find the back of the net. After collecting just 2 shots in the firsts period and being out shot, Gwinnett took the advantage in the second period out shootout the Lynx by a 9-5 margin.
With the game still scoreless, Adam Berkhoel made a game saving stop for the Gladiators at the 8:04 mark of the third period ranging across the crease to deny Augusta forward Mike Pereira off centering feed from Ryan Lang. Desbiens then scored what proved to be the game winner just a little over six minutes later.
Gwinnett was held scoreless on the man advantage in five tries while Augusta finished the game out shooting Gwinnett by a 26-21 margin. For Berkhoel, it was his first shout out of the season helping improve his record to 10-2-1 on the year.
