Glads top Lynx, 1-0, in duel

March 30, 2006 - ECHL (ECHL)
Augusta Lynx News Release

Hockey tradition states that as the playoffs draw near, scoring drops as emphasis on defense increases for playoff-bound teams. Such was the case for the Augusta Lynx and Gwinnett Gladiators Thursday night at the Augusta-Richmond County Civic Center in a 1-0 contest that went for the visitors.

Augusta (29-33-6) tied a team record for least shots allowed in a period when Gwinnett (47-13-7) managed just two chances on Mike Wall in the Lynx net. Meanwhile, the Lynx fired 13 shots at Adam Berkhoel, who also could not be beaten.

Through the second and into the third period, both teams had scoring chances but neither side was able to convert thanks to solid defense and great goaltending. Finally, it would be Guillaume Desbiens who broke through for the Gladiators, scoring at 14:34 after cutting in front of the Lynx net with the puck and depositing the biscuit over the left pad of Wall for the game's only goal. Derek Nesbitt and John Awe picked up the assists on the marker.

The Lynx would continue to fire pucks at Berkhoel, but he would stop all 26 shots en route to his first ECHL shutout of the year and earn his team the win. Wall finished with 20 saves on the evening and was saddled with the loss. Both teams finished 0-for-5 on the power play.

Augusta and Gwinnett will play a rematch tomorrow night back in Augusta at 7:35 pm. Tickets are on sale now by calling the Lynx office at (706) 724-4ICE, all TicketMaster locations, and on line at www.TicketMaster.com.
