CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte Checkers closed out the home schedule in dramatic fashion with an overtime win against the South Carolina Stingrays Thursday in front of 5,898 fans at St. Lawrence Homes Home Ice at Charlotte Bobcats Arena. Mike Bayrack scored twice for the Checkers including the game winner at the 1:23 mark of overtime.

The Checkers held a 2-1 lead from the 15:24 mark of the second period until the 19:01 mark of the third. Bayrack scored the first goal of the night early in the first period which was answered by a goal from Cail MacLean of the Stingrays midway through the first period.

Nathan Gillies scored the Checkers second goal of the night which was nearly the game winner. South Carolina's MacLean scored his second goal of the night with 59 seconds remaining as the Stingrays pulled their goalie to gain a man advantage.

The Checkers jumped on the power play early in the overtime period after a holding call on South Carolina came just 13 seconds into it and Bayrack scored the game winner going top shelf at the 1:23 mark.

The Checkers gained some cushion in the playoff race as Gwinnett beat Augusta tonight 1-0. Charlotte currently holds the fifth place spot in the South Division with 67 points while Augusta sits with 64 points.

The Checkers are back in action tomorrow at South Carolina and Saturday at Augusta. Playoff tickets are on sale now and can be purchase by calling the Checkers front office at (704) 342-4-ICE.
