Indianapolis Indians News Release
LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Second baseman Yurendell de Caster and center fielder Chris Duffy continued to hit at a scorching pace, while right-hander Chris Enochs issued no free passes over six innings as Indianapolis scored another 8-4 victory over Louisville Sunday night at Slugger Field. The Indians improve to 48-35 with the win, while the Bats fall to 40-44 on the season.
De Caster, who has recorded a base knock in 23 of his last 24 contests, extended his hitting streak to nine games by finishing 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles, two runs and two RBI. The 25-year-old is hitting .519 (14-for-27) with six runs and six RBI over his last six games.
Duffy, who registered his team-leading 23rd multi-hit game of the season, turned in a 3-for-5 performance with two runs just 24 hours after going 3-for-5 with a pair of scores and four RBI in the series opener at Louisville. The 25-year-old is hitting .519 (14-for-27) with eight runs and five RBI over his last six games.
Indianapolis LF Nate McLouth also extended his hitting streak to nine games by going 1-for-5 with an RBI.
The Indianapolis offense stayed hot from the start, plating two runs in the second, two in the third and one in the fourth.
Catcher Ronny Paulino, who has now hit safely in five straight, opened the second inning with a double to left field. De Caster followed by delivering an RBI single to right as Paulino came home with the game's first run. SS Alfredo Amezaga then crushed an RBI triple to left as De Caster came plateward.
In the third, Duffy drilled a single to left center, moved to second on a Bats miscue and came around to touch the dish on Paulino's RBI single to center. 3B Ty Wigginton then scored on RF Graham Koonce's sacrifice fly to center.
1B Brad Eldred opened the top of the fourth with a two-bagger to center field. Three batters later, "Big Country" came rumbling home when McLouth tagged an RBI single to left center.
Louisville pushed across a run in the fourth and a run in the sixth before narrowing the deficit with a two spot in the seventh. LF Pedro Swann singled through the left side, moved to second on 1B Rick Bell's single up the middle and came around to score on catcher Steve Lomasney's RBI groundout. Bell then came plateward on pinch-hitter A.J. Zapp's base knock to right center.
Enochs (6.0 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 0 BB, 5 SO), who moved from the Indians bullpen to a starting role on June 18, improved to 2-1 with the win.
RHP Kirk Bullinger (1.2 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 2 SO), LHP Mike Johnston (0.1 IP, 2 H, 1 SO) and RHP Mark Corey (1.0 IP, 1 BB, 2 SO) combined for three scoreless innings of relief as Indianapolis improved to 37-3 when leading after seven innings and 39-3 when holding an advantage after eight frames. Corey also collected his 15th save of the campaign.
Bats RHP Jared Fernandez (6.0 IP, 11 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 0 BB, 4 SO), who allowed the most hits of any opposing pitcher this season, fell to 5-5 with the loss.
The Indians pounded out 15 base knocks on the night, marking the sixth time in the last seven games that the Tribe has reached double figures in the hit column.
Indianapolis and Louisville continue their five-game series Monday evening at Victory Field. The Independence Day special is slated for 5:30 p.m. with two fireworks shows to follow. The first 10,000 fans through the gates also receive a hand-held American Flag.
The contest will be carried by both WHMB-TV 40 and ESPN-950 AM. Howard Kellman calls all the action in the television booth, while Robert Portnoy and Greg Rakestraw have the radio play-by-play.
