
Too Little Too Late as Bats Lose, 8-4

LOUISVILLE, KY- The Bats couldn't quite produce enough late runs to come back in front of 13,131 fans at Louisville Slugger Field on a wonderful night at the ballpark. The Indianapolis Indians improved their record to 48-35 while the Bats fell to 40-44.
The Indians were to first to get on the scoreboard in the 2nd inning. Ronny Paulino opened the inning with a double to center field. Two batters later Yurendell de Caster flared a single into shallow right field to drive in Paulino giving Indianapolis a 1-0 lead. Alfredo Amezaga came up to the plate with two outs and one man on and smashed a triple off the left field wall driving in de Caster giving the Indians a 2-0 lead.
The Indians' bats remained hot in the third inning with three straight singles by Chris Duffy, Ty Wiggington and Paulino making the score 3-0 Indians. Bats pitcher Jared Fernandez then threw a wild pitching allowing for Wiggington and Paulino to advance to 2nd and 3rd. A sacrifice fly by Graham Koonce added another run giving the Indians a 4-0 lead.
The hits kept coming for the Indians in the 4th when Brad Eldred started the inning with a double. He was later driven in by a two-out single by Nate McLouth adding to the Indians lead, making the score 5-0 Tribe.
The Bats got their first hit in the 4th inning when Anderson Machado led off the inning with a double. He was driven in two batters later by a single up the middle giving the Bats their first run to make the score 5-1 Indians.
The Indians kept the scoring going in the 5th when they added another run to their lead with an Eldred single, driving in de Caster and making it 6-1 Indians.
The Bats had some power of their own in the 6th inning. Alex Fernandez pinch hit for Jared Fernandez and homered over the right field wall making the score 6-2 Indians.
Louisville answered again in the 7th by opening the inning with singles by Pedro Swann and Ricky Bell. One out later A.J. Zapp came in as a pinch hitter and singled to drive in both runners, decreasing Indianapolis' lead to two.
The Indians added to the lead in the 9th with a RBI single by Wigginton and a RBI single by de Caster.
Louisville starting pitcher Jared Fernandez (5-5) lasted six innings, allowing six runs on 11 hits while striking out four en route to the lose.
Indianapolis starting pitcher Chris Enochs (2-1) picked up the win tonight. Enochs went six innings allowing four runs on seven hits while striking out five. Mark Corey got the save with one inning of work while striking out two.
The time of tonight's game was 2:46. The Bats will travel to Indianapolis for a two-game series with tomorrow night's game to begin at 6:30 p.m.. The starting probables are LHP Cory Stewart (5-6, 5.13) for the Indians and RHP Steve Kelly (5-4, 4.16) for the Bats.
