
Gillies & Niederreiter Assigned to Sound Tigers

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (November 1, 2011) - The New York Islanders announced today that forwards Trevor Gillies and Nino Niederreiter have been assigned to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers of the American Hockey League (AHL). Niederreiter, who has been sidelined since the beginning of the season with a groin injury, heads to Bridgeport on a conditioning assignment.
Gillies, 32, played in three games this season with the Islanders. Last season, the Cambridge, ON, native established career highs in goals (2), points (2) and games played (39) during his twelfth professional season and his second with the Islanders.
In 57 career National Hockey League games with the Islanders and the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, Gillies has totaled three points (two goals, one assist) and 261 penalty minutes. Gillies has also played in 354 career AHL games with the Lowell Lock Monsters, Worcester IceCats, Providence Bruins, Springfield Falcons, Hartford Wolf Pack, Portland Pirates, Albany River Rats and Bridgeport Sound Tigers.
Niederreiter, 19, was the Islanders' first=2Dround selection, fifth overall, in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. The Chur, CHE, native appeared in nine games with the Islanders at the start of the 2010-11 season before being returned to his Western Hockey League club, the Portland Winterhawks. Niederreiter finished his second WHL season with 70 points (41 goals, 29 assists) in 55 games.
In a separate transaction, the Sound Tigers also announced today that forward Dan Kissel has been released from his professional tryout contract (PTO). Kissel appeared in the first two AHL games of his career this past weekend with the Sound Tigers and did not record a point.
