TORONTO - Travis Lulay, J.C Sherritt, Luca Congi and Jon Cornish were named the Gibson's Finest CFL Players of the Month for September, the Canadian Football League announced today.
The four players were chosen by a panel of judges that includes former Canadian Football League players Matt Dunigan and Duane Forde, now of TSN, and Pierre Vercheval of RDS.
Gibson's Finest CFL Offensive Player of the Month
Travis Lulay
QB - BC Lions
BC Lions quarter back Travis Lulay was named the Offensive Player of the Month for September. Lulay completed 116 of 185 passes and threw for 1,419 yards and 11 touchdowns in the last five games. Lulay's consistent play has helped the defending Grey Cup Champions to first place in the West Division and to the best record in the CFL.
During the last five games, Lulay has also put his name into the CFL record books, throwing a touchdown pass in 24 consecutive games. Only Sam Etcheverry who threw a touchdown pass in 34 consecutive games sits ahead of Lulay.
Gibson's Finest CFL Defensive Player of the Month
J.C Sherritt
LB - Edmonton Eskimos
Edmonton Eskimos linebacker J.C Sherritt was named the Defensive Player of the Month for September. Sherritt compiled 34 tackles, three sacks and one forced fumble for the Eskimos in the last five games. This is Sherritt's third consecutive 2012 Player of the Month award as he continues to disrupt offences throughout the entire league.
On September 22, Sherritt became the first player to reach 100 tackles in the 2012 season.
Gibson's Finest CFL Special Teams Player of the Month
Luca Congi
P/K - Hamilton Tiger-Cats
Hamilton Tiger-Cats punter/kicker Luca Congi was named the Special Teams Player of the Month for September. Congi was a perfect 15 for 15 on field goal attempts and converted 14 of 14 extra points, contributing 59 total points to the Ticats offence in the last five games; including a 12 point effort against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers which accounted for his team's total offensive output.
Congi has been successful on his last 21 field goal attempts which puts him one back of the sixth longest streak in CFL history. (Sean Flemming, 22) Eight of Congi's 21 field goals in that stretch have been from 40+ yards. Congi's impressive numbers have been crucial in the Ticats' quest to lock down the final playoff spot.
Gibson's Finest CFL Canadian Player of the Month
Jon Cornish
RB - Calgary Stampeders
Calgary Stampeders running back Jon Cornish was named the Canadian Player of the Month for September. Cornish compiled 556 yards and five touchdowns on 76 carries and also added 32 yards and one touchdown on eight receptions helping the Stampeders to a 4-1 record in the month of September.
The New Westminster, B.C native claimed three Canadian Player of the Week awards in the past month and also become the first player to reach the 1,000 yard rushing mark in the 2012 season. Cornish's impressive numbers have been crucial in helping the Stampeders to within one game of first place in the competitive West Division.
