Stockton Ports News Release

SAN JOSE, Calif. - For a second straight night, the Stockton Ports had a five-run fifth inning. On Friday night at Municipal Stadium, however, it wasn't enough for a victory. The San Jose Giants scored eight runs in the seventh inning on their way to an 11-7 win over the Ports in a back-and-forth affair to kick off a four-game series.

San Jose jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a run in the first and a run in the third. The first-inning run was driven in on a sac-fly by Jonah Arenado and the run in the third on an RBI single by Robbie Garvey.

Stockton did not have a hit and struck out eight times through four innings versus Giants starter Jordan Johnson. Seth Brown opened the fifth inning with an RBI double to right field, Stockton's first hit of the night. Two batters later, Mikey White walked which put runners at the corners with one out. A balk was then called on Johnson that allowed Brown to score from third and White to get into scoring position at second. Iolana Akau provided an RBI single to right that tied the game at 2-2. Two batters later with one on and two out, James Harris hit a two-run homer to right-center that gave the Ports their first lead at 4-2. Richie Martin followed with a single and B.J. Boyd tripled him home to make it a 5-2 contest and knock Johnson from the game.

Johnson did not factor into the decision, going 4.2 innings and allowing five runs on five hits while striking out a season-high nine.

Port starter Kyle Friedrichs pitched into the sixth and allowed a leadoff double to Arenado, followed by an RBI single by Jose Vizcaino, Jr. that cut the Ports lead to 5-3. After Daniel Carbonell walked, Friedrichs was lifted for Joey Wagman (3-5), who went on to strand the tying runners in scoring position to end the inning. Friedrichs would be rendered a no-decision, going five-plus innings and allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out three.

Wagman pitched into the seventh, an inning in which the Giants scored eight runs to take the lead for good. Ronnie Jebavy opened the frame with a single and Robbie Garvey followed with a bunt that Wagman missed when trying to field, a play that was ruled an error. With one out, Arenado delivered an RBI single to left to make it 5-4. After Vizcaino flew out, Carbonell tied the game with an infield single to third. After T.J. Bennett walked to load the bases with two outs, Ty Ross delivered a three-run double to right that put the Giants back in front 8-5. Wagman was then lifted for Koby Gauna, who gave up an RBI single to Christian Paulino, followed by a two-run homer to Jebavy that gave the Giants an 11-5 advantage.

Wagman suffered the loss, going 1.2 innings and allowing six runs (one earned) on four hits while striking out two. Gauna allowed two runs on an inning-and-a-third.

Jeff Soptic (1-3) pitched 2.1 scoreless innings in relief for San Jose. Pat Young took over in the eighth and, with two on and two out, gave up an RBI single to Akau that made it an 11-6 game. The Ports added another run in the eighth on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to 11-7, but would get no closer.

Soptic picked up his first win of the season. Young pitched around a leadoff single in the ninth and did not allow a run in the game's final frame.

The Ports and Giants play the second game of their four-game series on Saturday at Municipal Stadium. Heath Fillmyer (4-6, 3.71 ERA) makes the start for Stockton, opposed by San Jose right-hander Jose Reyes (2-2, 4.28 ERA). First pitch is set for 5 p.m. PDT.
