Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
Adelanto, CA-- Just one night after setting a season-high in runs scored, the Quakes' offense was held in check, as the High Desert Mavericks turned the tables on Rancho Cucamonga, winning on Saturday night at Heritage Field by a final of 3-2.
The Rancho offense put up just five hits on Saturday night and left a total of five men stranded over the final two innings, as they had multiple opportunities to tie the game.
Trailing 3-2 in the eighth against Mavs' reliever Nick Gardewine, the Quakes loaded the bases for Matt Beaty. But with one out, Beaty grounded to third baseman Tripp Martin, who came home to record the out on Erick Mejia. On the play, the home plate umpire ruled that Mejia interfered with catcher Jose Trevino's throw to first and Beaty was called out, ending the inning.
In the ninth, the Quakes put runners at first and third with nobody out, but Joey Curletta popped up for the first out. After Gardewine walked Devan Ahart to load the bases, the Mavs brought in reliever Shane McCain. Pinch-hitter Ariel Sandoval went down swinging on four pitches, before Mejia grounded out weakly to first base, ending the game and giving McCain his third save of the year.
Trailing 1-0 in the third, Garrett Kennedy ripped his third homer of the year, tying the game at 1-1 against eventual winner Cole Wiper (7-3).
Quakes' starter Andrew Sopko (9-2) was solid on Saturday, but didn't get enough run support, as he gave up three total runs, including solo homers to Luke Tendler and Jose Cardona. Sopko allowed three runs on seven hits over seven innings, with seven punch-outs and three walks.
Rancho (10-7, 52-35) will send Yaisel Sierra (4-4) to the mound on Sunday, as he'll be opposed by Ariel Jurado (7-2). Game time from Heritage Field will be at 5:05pm.
After the Quakes' eight-game road trip, Rancho returns to LoanMart Field on Wednesday, July 13th for a Terra Vista Animal Hospital Bark in the Ballpark. tickets are still available by calling (909) 481-5000 or online at rcquakes.com. Go Quakes!
