Ports Cruise Past Giants to Even Series

SAN JOSE, CA - The Stockton Ports scored eight runs over the fifth and sixth innings on their way to an 11-5 victory over the San Jose Giants on Saturday evening at Municipal Stadium. Stockton pounded out 17 hits in the contest to even the series at a game apiece. The Giants (47-39) suffered just their second loss in six games during the current homestand.

Dylan Davis (4-for-5, 2B, HR, 2 RBI) homered as part of a four-hit game to lead San Jose offensively in defeat. Cristian Paulino (3-for-4, 2B, RBI) added three hits, including a home run, in the loss. Both Davis and Paulino finished a triple shy of the cycle.

The Giants jumped out early with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first against Ports starter Heath Fillmyer to take a 2-0 lead. With two outs, Davis smacked a solo home run to left for the first run of the contest. Jonah Arenado then reached second on a two-base throwing error committed by Stockton shortstop Richie Martin before scoring when Jose Vizcaino, Jr. reached on an error charged to third baseman Melvin Mercedes.

Stockton through answered with single runs in the second and third innings against San Jose starter Jose Reyes to tie the game. In the top of the second, Seth Brown doubled and immediately scored when the next batter, Sandber Pimentel, singled. Then in the third, consecutive singles from Mercedes and James Harris started the inning before a Martin sacrifice bunt advanced the runners to second and third. B.J. Boyd followed with an RBI groundout to tie the game 2-2.

The Ports then exploded for a five-run top of the fifth inning against Reyes to take control of the game. With the score still tied 2-2, Mercedes led off by reaching on a Vizcaino fielding error at second. Harris followed with a double to deep left center plating Mercedes with the go-ahead run before Martin delivered an RBI single to make it 4-2. After Reyes set down the next two hitters, Brown drew a walk before Pimentel crushed a three-run home run to left center. The round-tripper capped the five-run inning and gave Stockton a 7-2 lead.

Reyes (2-3) was charged with the loss after surrendering seven runs (three earned) on nine hits over five innings. He walked one and struck out one.

The Ports kept the pressure on with three more runs in the sixth against Giants reliever Dusten Knight (3 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 0 BB, 2 SO). Consecutive singles from Iolana Akau and Mercedes started the inning. Harris followed with a sharp single to center to load the bases and when center fielder Ronnie Jebavy threw wildly back into the infield for an error, Akau raced home with the first run of the frame. Martin then laced a double to deep left plating two more Stockton runs for a 10-2 cushion.

In the bottom of the seventh, Paulino belted a solo home run down the left field line to cut the Ports lead to 10-3. The home run was Paulino's third of the season.

In the top of the eighth. Boyd launched a solo homer for the Ports off of Knight as Stockton reclaimed their eight-run advantage.

San Jose then scored twice in the bottom of the ninth on a Garvey RBI groundout before Davis' two-out RBI single.

Fillmyer (5-6) earned the win after pitching the first five innings for the Ports with two runs (one earned) and four hits allowed. He struck out two and walked none.

Notes: * Stockton out-hit San Jose 17-11. * The Ports' 17 hits matched the most allowed by the Giants in a single game this season. * Jebavy (0-for-5) saw his hitting streak snapped at 10 games. * Davis is batting .333 with three home runs and 10 RBI's in 10 games with San Jose this season. * Stockton won for the first time in five games at Municipal Stadium this year.

On Deck: The Giants and Ports continue their four-game series on Sunday evening with first pitch at Municipal Stadium scheduled for 5:00 PM. Jose Morel (2-3, 3.10 ERA) is slated to start on the mound for San Jose while Stockton is expected to counter with Matt Sergey (0-0, 3.60 ERA).
