Modesto Nuts News Release
MODESTO, CA (April 27th, 2013) -- San Jose erupted for 10 runs after four innings, and cruised to a 10-0 shutout win against the Nuts at John Thurman Field on Saturday night.
After defeating the Giants (17-6) in extra-innings on Tuesday, the Nuts (9-14) have now dropped four in a row to first-place San Jose.
Devin Harris, who has been the major culprit this week, continued his tear as he homered and drove in four runs to lead an 18 hit Giants attack. Harris has now totaled five home runs and 12 RBI's in the five games the two clubs have now played in a row.
Nuts starter Ben Alsup (1-2), who entered the game with the league's second best ERA at 1.35, took the loss. Harris drove in a run in the first inning to get the scoring started, and added a two-run homer against Alsup in the third to make it 4-0. San Jose then rallied for five runs on seven singles between Alsup and reliever Nick Schnaitmann, with Alsup being charged for a total of seven earned.
Giants starter Adalberto Mejia (2-0) was perfect through the first five innings, and allowed only two base runners in six shutout frames for the win. Harold Riggins led off the sixth with a single to break up his perfect bid, and after Mejia erased that with a double-play, Niko Gallego drew a two-out walk.
Modesto threatened to score in the eighth getting two in scoring position after a single by Trevor Story and a double by Riggins, but reliever Kelvin Marte got out of the inning with no damage done.
After Schnaitmann gave up three runs as part of the fourth, Nuts relievers Kraig Sitton and Will Rankin combined to hold the Giants scoreless over the final 4 1/3 innings.
The Nuts, who have now dropped seven of their last eight, will try to salvage a win as they wrap a three-game series tomorrow afternoon. First pitch is set for 1:05 p.m., with Modesto RHP Dan Winkler (2-0, 1.93) set to start, opposite Giants RHP Austin Fleet (2-0, 2.53).
