Lancaster JetHawks News Release
SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - Telvin Nash followed a Preston Tucker double with a tie-breaking double of his own and the JetHawks went on to beat the Inland Empire 66ers, 5-3, on Wednesday afternoon at San Manuel Stadium.
After Tucker led off with a double against reliever Eric Cendejas (3-1), Nash doubled into the left field gab to score Tucker. The next batter, Chris Epps, drove in Nash with a base-hit to make it 5-3.
Cendejas, who had not allowed a hit over his previous four outings, picked up the loss.
Rehabbing Angels infielder Alberto Callaspo slugged a solo home run to start the bottom of the seventh against Blair Walters to tie the game, 3-3. Walters (3-0), who picked up his team-leading third win, allowed two runs in two-plus innings of work.
With the JetHawks ahead in the eighth, Walters allowed two singles to start the inning before he was relieved by Kenny Long. With the bases loaded and nobody out, Long struck out Ryan Jones and induced an inning-ending double play off the bat of Eric Stamets. Long pitched a perfect ninth to pick up his second save.
The JetHawks had scored two runs in the seventh to come from behind and take a lead. With runners at second and third and two outs, Andrew Aplin hit a pop-fly to shallow left field. Stamets, the shortstop, lost the ball in the sun and it dropped in for a hit allowing both runners to score.
Aplin picked up an RBI with a single earlier in the game. His three RBIs on the day give him a team-high 25 this season.
Mike Foltynewicz worked in and out of jams during his four innings of worked. The right-hander, making his fifth start, allowed one run on six hits with six strikeouts. He also walked two batters and threw two wild pitches.
66ers starter Eswarlin Jimenez pitched into the sixth inning but had to leave the game when he hurt his foot covering first base on a Tucker ground ball. The lefty gave up one run on five hits and struck out four to go along with three walks.
With the win, the JetHawks (15-10) held on to the first place spot in the South Division and are now one and a half games ahead of the 66ers (14-12). The rubber game of the series will take place on Thursday at 7:05 pm at San Manuel Stadium. Brady Rodgers (1-1, 4.50) and Chris Devenski (2-1, 3.96) will pitch for Lancaster against righty Austin Wood (0-1, 2.40).
