SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - Luis Cruz was strong over five scoreless innings but the JetHawks dropped the series opener to Inland Empire 66ers, 3-2, on Tuesday night at San Manuel Stadium.
Cruz and Inland Empire starter Mark Sappington each did not allow runs through the first five innings of the game.
The JetHawks left-hander allowed just two hits and struck out five batters with two walks.
Lancaster put runs on the board against Sappington to take the lead in the sixth inning. Preston Tucker lined a double off the right field fence to score Nolan Fontana and Matt Duffy.
Tommy Shirley (0-2) came on in the bottom of the sixth in relief of Cruz and coughed up the lead. The left-hander walked the first two batters he faced before Alex Yarbrough loaded the bases with a single.
Brian Hernandez followed with a double down the left field line to score two runs and tie the game. Yarbrough later came in to score on a Michael Snyder sacrifice fly to give Inland Empire a one-run lead.
Sappington (4-0) picked up the win. He allowed four hits and matched a season-high with four walks. He also fanned five.
Matt Duffy finished the game 0-for-4 to end his Cal League season-best hitting streak at 15 games.
T.J. Geith threw scoreless frames in the eighth and ninth innings.
