Inland Empire 66ers News Release
San Bernardino, CA- With Angels infielder Alberto Callaspo at 3rd base and Angels reliever Mark Lowe pitching in from the bullpen, the Inland Empire 66ers (14-11) got an extra boost from their big club and used it to take down the Lancaster JetHawks (14-10) by a 3-2 final. The win pulls the 66ers to just a half game back of the division leading JetHawks.
Callaspo went 0-for-2 for the 66ers on Tuesday but his box score does not indicate how well he played.
Offensively he was unlucky, lining a ball up the middle off the pitchers back, only to see it roll to the first baseman who stepped on the bag in his first at bat. Then in his second he hit a fairly deep fly ball to center but not deep enough to escape San Manuel Stadium.
Defensively Callaspo was very strong in support of starter Mark Sappington, fielding all three grounders that were hit his way including one to start an inning ending double play. Sappington did not need much help delivering his third straight quality start on the way to his league best fourth win of the season.
Inland Empire's offense all came in the 6th inning when Brian Hernandez drove a double down the left field line with the bases loaded to tie the contest at two. The next hitter Michael Snyder delivered a sacrifice fly to give the 66ers all the offense they would need.
The bullpen took it from there with rehabbing Halo Mark Lowe pitching a 1-2-3 7th inning including a strikeout, and Mike Morin shutting out the JetHawks the final two frames to earn his second save of the season.
The Inland Empire 66ers are now just a half game out of first in the California League South and can take over the division lead Wednesday, May 1 st when they rematch with Lancaster at 11:00 AM. The game can be heard on the 66ers flagship station AM 1050 KCAA or online via 66ers.com.
