Stockton Ports News Release
STOCKTON, Calif. - The Stockton Ports allowed more hits in a game on Tuesday night than they had all season at Banner Island Ballpark. The San Jose Giants cranked out 18 hits, including a 5-for-5 performance by Christian Arroyo, on their way to a 6-3 win over the Ports in the opener of a four-game series as Stockton saw its three-game win streak snapped.
Ports starter Dylan Covey allowed six hits over the first four innings but was able to keep San Jose out of the run column in that span. Giants starter Tommy Hanson found himself in a bases-loaded jam with nobody out in the first. Hanson got Matt Chapman to hit into a 1-2-3 double-play and then struck out Tyler Marincov to escape unscathed.
With the game scoreless into the fifth, San Jose broke through versus Covey. Covey hit Seth Harrison to open the frame and then gave up an RBI double to Arroyo to give the Giants a 1-0 lead. Two batters later, Angel Villalona doubled down the left field line to score Arroyo. With two on and one out, Daniel Carbonell added an RBI single to left to stretch the Giants lead to 3-0.
Covey would get a no-decision, going 5.1 innings and allowing three runs on a career-high 11 hits while striking out four.
The Ports got a run back in the bottom of the fifth as Branden Cogswell homered to open the frame and make it a 3-1 game. The home run broke up a stretch of 11-straight batters retired by Hanson, who would also receive a no-decision after going five innings and allowing one run on two hits while striking out five.
Christian Jones (3-0) took over for the Giants in the bottom of the sixth and gave up a one-out single to John Nogowski. Chapman followed with a game-tying two-run homer to right-center to knot the score at 3-3.
Sam Roberts (2-2), who took over in the middle of the sixth and stranded a pair of inherited baserunners, came back out for the seventh and gave up the go-ahead run. Brian Ragira, Carbonell and Jeff Kobernus each singled to start the inning, loaded the bases with nobody out. Ty Ross delivered a sac-fly to left to put San Jose in front for good at 4-3. It was the lone run allowed by Roberts who suffered the loss after allowing three hits over an inning-and-two-thirds in relief.
Phil Coke entered the game to begin the eighth inning, making his second appearance in a Ports uniform and his first appearance in Stockton since pitching for Delta College in 2002. Coke yielded a leadoff double to Harrison followed by an infield single to Arroyo that put runners at the corners. Juan Perez hit a sac-fly to center that stretched the San Jose lead to 5-3. After Villalona singled, Ragira followed with an RBI double to left that made it a 6-3 contest. Coke allowed two runs on four hits in his lone inning of relief.
After allowing the two-run homer to Chapman, Jones went on to pitch a scoreless seventh and retire the first batter in the eighth on his way to picking up the win, going 2.1 innings total and allowing two runs on three hits while striking out one.
Ian Gardeck recorded the final two outs of the eighth inning while Jake Smith (SV, 1) pitched a perfect ninth to record his first save of the season.
Trevor Bayless pitched a perfect eighth inning while striking out two for Stockton.
The Ports and Giants play the second game of their four-game set on Wednesday night at Banner Island Ballpark. Left-hander Dillon Overton (2-4, 3.82 ERA) makes the start for Stockton, opposed by San Jose right-hander Keury Mella (3-1, 2.95 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:10 p.m. PDT.
