Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
RANCHO CUCAMONGA, CA - Rancho Cucamonga continued its strong second-half start, blowing out High Desert 10-1 in the series opener at LoanMart Field on Tuesday night.
The Quakes (4-1, 45-30) jumped in front of Mavericks' starter Trey Lambert (2-2) in the first inning. Brandon Trinkwon opened the frame with a single to right field. Dodgers' rehabber Carl Crawford drew a four-pitch walk. Tyler Ogle walked to load the bases. Paul Hoenecke's long fly ball to right field fell for a bases-clearing triple, staking the home team to a 3-0 lead.
A defensive lapse secured a run for Rancho Cucamonga in the second. Jacob Scavuzzo started the inning with a single to right field, but was erased from the bases on a Johan Mieses fielder's choice. Trinkwon singled up the middle, moving Mieses to second. Brandon Dixon's grounder to shortstop went through the legs of Alberto Triunfel, allowing Mieses to score and make it a 4-0 contest.
The Quakes added another run in the third against Lambert. Ogle and Hoenecke delivered back-to-back singles at the outset of the inning. Ogle advanced to third when Joey Curletta bounced into a double play. Scavuzzo plated Ogle with a single to left for his first RBI at the High-A level, putting his club in front, 5-0.
High Desert (1-4, 38-36) mustered its only run in the fifth inning against Quakes' starter Jeff Brigham (4-3). Kellin Deglan hit an opposite-field solo homer to left for his tenth of the season, trimming the deficit to 5-1. Brigham, who has now won four of his last five decisions, allowed the lone run and two hits over five solid innings.
Rancho Cucamonga blew the game open in the bottom of the fifth against Mavericks' reliever David Perez. Scavuzzo hit a solo homer to left-center for his first as a Quake. Mieses was hit by a pitch and Trinkwon singled, placing runners at the corners. Crawford chased Mieses home with an RBI groundout to second base. Dixon singled to center field, scoring Trinkwon. Ogle capped the four-run inning with a base-hit up the middle, plating Dixon for a 9-1 advantage.
The Quakes tacked on another run in the eighth against right-hander Anyelo Leclerc. With one out, Scavuzzo walked. A potential double play off the bat of Travis Witherspoon resulted in a throwing error against Leclerc and runners at the corners. Trinkwon delivered his fourth hit of a game, a single to right field that scored Scavuzzo to make it a 10-1 game.
Two Rancho Cucamonga newcomers proved to be very impressive out of the bullpen on Tuesday. Right-hander Karch Kowalczyk pitched two scoreless innings in relief of Brigham, surrendering only a walk. Righty Kyle Hooper retired all six batters he faced over the final two innings to preserve the victory. Both hurlers joined the Quakes from Low-A Great Lakes last week.
With the win, Rancho Cucamonga improves to a California League-best 26-10 at home this season and is now a season-high 15 games over .500 at 45-30.
The Quakes continue the four-game set against High Desert on Wednesday night. Rancho Cucamonga will send right-hander Zack Bird (4-3, 4.43 ERA) to the mound, while the Mavericks counter with righty Connor Sadzeck (1-0, 5.40 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm. If you can't make it to the ballpark, you can catch all the action on FOX Sports 1350 AM, beginning with the LoanMart Pregame Show at 6:50.
