STOCKTON, CA - Christian Arroyo was a perfect 5-for-5 at the plate to lead an 18-hit Giants outburst in a 6-3 San Jose victory over the Stockton Ports on Tuesday evening at Banner Island Ballpark. The Giants (32-43) took the lead for good with a run in the top of the seventh en route to claiming the opener of the four-game series.

Arroyo (5-for-5, 2 2B, RBI) singled three times and doubled twice to tie the San Jose Giants single-game hit record. Angel Villalona (3-for-5, 2B, RBI) and Jeff Kobernus (3-for-5, SB) added three hits apiece for the Giants.

The game was scoreless through four innings until San Jose broke through with a three-run top of the fifth. Seth Harrison was hit by a pitch to start the frame before Arroyo blasted an RBI double to the fence in deep left center to give the Giants the lead. After Juan Perez grounded out, Villalona stepped to the plate and grounded a double down the left field line to plate Arroyo for a 2-0 lead. Two batters, Daniel Carbonell delivered an RBI single into left center to make it 3-0.

Tommy Hanson started on the mound for San Jose and allowed just one infield single over the first four innings. The right-hander had retired 11 straight Ports hitters until Brandon Cogswell led off the bottom of the fifth with a solo home run to trim the Giants lead to 3-1.

Hanson finished his night with just one run and two hits allowed over five innings. He walked one and struck out five during his 81-pitch performance.

Christian Jones relieved Hanson to begin the bottom of the sixth and promptly allowed two runs as Stockton drew even. With one out, John Nogowski singled before Matt Chapman homered to right-center field. The home run, Chapman's team-leading 12th of the season, tied the score 3-3.

The Giants though immediately reclaimed the lead with a single run in the top of the seventh. Brian Ragira led off with a single before Carbonell's bunt single put runners on first and second. Kobernus followed by reaching on an infield single to deep shortstop to load the bases and then Ty Ross hit a sacrifice fly to left as Ragira scored giving San Jose a 4-3 lead.

Jones returned to the mound in the bottom of the seventh and pitched around a leadoff single to keep the Giants in front by a run. In the eighth, San Jose pushed across two more runs to extend their lead. Facing former major leaguer Phil Coke, Harrison started the inning with a double off the wall in left. Arroyo then singled sharply off the glove of the second baseman Cogswell - his fifth hit of the game - to put runners on the corners. Perez was up next and he hit a sacrifice fly to center plating Harrison. Then after Villalona singled, Ragira blasted an RBI double off the wall in left center for a 6-3 cushion.

In the bottom of the eighth, Jones struck out the first batter of the inning before Ian Gardeck (2/3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO) recorded the final two outs. Jake Smith then struck out two in a perfect bottom of the ninth to seal the victory.

Jones (3-0) was credited with the win after tossing 2 1/3 innings with two runs (both earned) and three hits allowed. He struck out one and walked none. Smith notched his first save of the season.

Sam Roberts (2-2) suffered the loss out of the Ports bullpen after yielding the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh.
