Bakersfield Blaze News Release

The Bakersfield Blaze nearly waged a momentum-building comeback, but just two outs from victory, the Blaze unraveled, and the host Modesto Nuts scored one in the 9th to tie before walking off in the 10th, 5-4, on Tuesday night in Modesto.

The Blaze trailed most of the contest. After a pair of scoreless innings to begin the game, Blaze starter Brett Ash hit a road bump in the 3rd. Modesto scored three times on two free passes and three hits, and moved in front 3-0.

From that point forward, Ash was incredible. The Topeka, Kansas kid ended up working a season-high 8.0 innings, and allowed just two singles after the 3rd.

The Blaze got a run in the 4th on three infield singles off Nuts starter Konner Wade, and the game stayed a 3-1 Nuts edge into the 8th, when the Blaze seemed to turn the tables.

With Sam Moll on the hill, Nelson Ward bunted for a hit, and with one out, Tim Lopes singled him to third. Lopes was caught stealing, but Guillermo Pimentel doubled home Ward to cut the deficit to one, and Tyler O'Neill clobbered a mammoth two-run homer to deepest left-centerfield to put the Blaze in front 4-3.

Ash left with the lead, but the Blaze wagon lost its wheel in the 9th, and again in the 10th.

In the 9th, with one out, Dillon Thomas tripled to right off Emilio Pagan, and the relay throw skipped away from the Blaze, scoring Thomas on his own hit, tying the game at four.

One inning later, with Paul Fry (L, 4-3) on the hill, a bloop single put the winning run aboard. Fry then hit a batter attempting to bunt, and an errant pickoff attempt by the Blaze catcher Daniel Torres moved the runners to second and third. With hope seemingly slipping away, the Blaze gave up a hit two pitches later, ending the contest in defeat, 5-4.

The series with Modesto continues on Wednesday night with another 7:05pm start. Eddie Campbell (Bak) opposes Harrison Musgrave (Mod), with the broadcast going live on BakersfieldBlaze.com and TuneIn Radio at 7:00pm. Dan Besbris has the call.
