
Gherson Named UHL Goaltender of the Week

Moline, IL- The United Hockey League announced today that Mallards goaltender Robert Gherson has been named the Southern Sports Supply Goaltender of the Week. Gherson went 3-0-0 this week to lead the Mallards to a five-game win streak, the team's longest of the season. Gherson is playing in the Quad Cities while on a two-way contract with the American Hockey League's Houston Aeros.
The Toronto native stopped 88 of 94 shots (.936 save percentage) during his three appearances this week. His allowed just six goals in three appearances to earn a 2.00 goals against average.
Gherson began the week by making 16 saves in the Mallards 4-3 shootout win on Tuesday in Kansas City. Gherson turned aside four of five Outlaw snipers in the shootout.
On Friday, Gherson continued his hot play by stopping 35 of 36 Motor City shots in a 2-1 Mallards victory. Gherson made 15 saves in the first period alone as the Mallards became just the third team to beat Motor City with Chris Chelios and Derian Hatcher in the line-up.
Gherson finished his week with a 5-2 win in Kalamazoo on Saturday. Gherson stopped 37 shots in earning his third consecutive road victory.
Gherson appeared in 189 Ontario League games over the last four seasons. Last year, Gherson played two games with the Sarnia Sting before being moved to the Owen Sound Attack. Overall, Gherson appeared in 44 OHL games while compiling a 3.17 goals against average and a .899 save percentage. He was one of the OHL's leading goaltenders in 2002-03. The Toronto native played 49 games with Sarnia going 26-12-7 with a 2.78 goals against average and a .915 save percentage. Gherson was third in the league in wins, eighth in save percentage and nine in goals against average.
The Mallards return to the ice on Wednesday in Rockford. The game starts at 7:05 p.m. with a 6:40 p.m. First Capital Financial Pre-Game Show on Fox Sports Radio AM 1230.
On Saturday, the Mallards return home to face the Port Huron Beacons on All Faiths Night. Game time is 7:00 p.m. Power lifter Bud Jefferies will be on hand to perform feats of strength and share his inspirational message. Jefferies' presentation begins at 5:30 p.m. Chicago Blackhawks organist Frank Pellico is also at The MARK on Saturday to entertain fans.
