Left Flank Runners - Since he arrived last year on loan, winger Jacob Shaffelburg has built a rapport with left back Dan Lovitz.
With Shaffelburg signed permanently, Lovitz said he's enjoying working with the Canadian international on the left side of the pitch.
"Jacob is a guy we identified as fitting our system well," Lovitz said. "He's fit in seamlessly at the end of last year, but it's nice to start a full campaign with him through preseason and to get him used to how we operate and finer tune some of the details of his game, and mine to put him in positions where he's incredibly hard to defend. I think there's a lot of exciting opportunities for myself and for him to create offensive momentum down our side of the field, and hopefully we're looking forward to doing that a little bit more consistently."
Home Style - The Boys in Gold started the first half of their season opener vs. NYCFC strong, scoring late in the first half to go up 1-0 thanks to a Walker Zimmerman strike off a set piece. By comparison, it took until the fourth home match of 2022 to find a goal in the first half (Alex Muyl vs. CF Montréal, May 18, 2022).
Head Coach Gary Smith says he wants his team to dictate the tempo on home soil.
"We performed very well in the opening game, and we want to impress our style," Smith said. "We are at home. We'd love to get off to the sort of start that we did against NYCFC. That mindset and application is very much a priority in how we've planned and prepared."
Scouting CF Montréal - This will be the fifth-ever meeting between Nashville SC and CF Montréal in the regular season. Nashville is 3W-0L-1D against Montréal, including last season's 2-1 win at GEODIS Park on May 18.
This season, Montréal has a brand-new coach in Hernán Losada, and a pair of new faces in the lineup in right back Aaron Herrera and center back George Campbell. With two road matches down, the team currently sits at 0W-2L-2D.
Smith says he understands the challenges his team will face against a team like Montréal under new management.
"It'll be a very talented Montréal team," Smith said. "There's some real quality in their group that rolls over from last year. With the addition of a new coach, they're looking in a spirited position and I do think their results are a long way off what they should have got out of the last two games. A big challenge in front of us."
Instead of wearing Nashville SC's typical Gold kit at GEODIS Park on Saturday, the club will don its Man in Black kit to accommodate with a request from MLS and Apple to avoid a color clash with CF Montréal. Due to a design issue with Montréal's primary kit, the Canadian side is relying on its gray secondary kit as its only available kit option for 2023.
