Minnesota United FC vs. New York Red Bulls Preview

March 10, 2023 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Minnesota United FC News Release

GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. - Minnesota United will welcome fans and the New York Red Bulls to Allianz Field for the club's 2023 Home Opener. In the last cross-conference match between the Red Bulls and the Loons, MNUFC triumphed with a 1-0 win, featuring a goal from Luis Amarilla and an outstanding performance from Dayne St. Clair with a penalty save and clean sheet. After the weekend, the Red Bulls come into Saturday without a win. It seems as though MNUFC will have the upper hand after recently spoiling FC Dallas' season opener, securing a 1-0 victory in Matchday 1 of the MLS Regular Season. Both Minnesota and New York have a balanced record of 2-2-0 (W-L-D) against each other in the regular season.

ADRIAN HEATH ON HIS EXPECTATIONS OF THE FANS AT ALLIANZ FIELD

"They'll always turn out. They never let us down. [I] don't expect anything else. I expect a full house, a really vibrant crowd as we always have, but we have to give them something. We always say this it's not a one-way street, it's a two-way street. We have to give them something to get into the game as well and that's what will be the message before the game."

ROBIN LOD ON HIS PLAYING STYLE DEPENDING ON HIS POSITION ON THE FIELD

"As you said, I just do what the coaches say is the best and try to help us as much as I can. Of course, when you're playing a different position, you have to think a little bit different, but I just go game-by-game and try to add up."

DAYNE ST. CLAIR ON STAYING FRESH AFTER AN EARLY BYE WEEK

"We were able to get a couple days off after the road win, but I think we ramped it right back up. Last week, we did a little bit more than we would do in a normal week just because we didn't have a game. We trained on the Saturday, which normally, we'd have a game. We had a scrimmage in-house here. It's just trying to stay fit and do as much as possible. At the end of the day, it's the home opener as well. If guys are looking forward to putting out a performance in front of our fans, that's all the motivation that I need."

STORYLINES PRESENTED BY BMW

The last time these two teams met in regular season play, Dayne St. Clair's career-high eight saves secured him a clean sheet, three points, and the starting goalkeeper spot. Dayne was a brick wall that allowed no red-donning bull through - in Red Bull Arena no less. MNUFC went on to win the match 1-0, and St. Clair won MLS Player of the Week - the only goalkeeper to be awarded this honor in 2022.

Last week's underwhelming result is especially disappointing for a New York squad that also failed to score in their season opener in Orlando, despite outshooting their opponents 14-6. A handball in the box awarded Orlando a penalty kick, and the Red Bulls walked away with zero points with a final score of 1-0 - a difficult start to the season.

The Loons were successful in their Red Bull repellant tactics last season, and the team we will see on Saturday is very similar to that of 2022. Dayne is in as good of shape as ever, and his presence alone might send some shivers down the ol' Bull's spine. The MNUFC defense is just as solid, too, with great showings from new defenders Miguel Tapias and Zarek Valentin in the season opener. Luis Amarilla, the forward who scored against NYRB last year, will also be back for this game after missing the season opener due to visa issues. However, with the early second-half goal from Ménder García last match, it will be interesting to see what head coach Adrian Heath does with the lineup.
