Oshawa Generals News Release
Brampton, Ontario - Oshawa's 5 game winning streak came to an end Sunday afternoon. They lost 6-2 to the Central Division leading Brampton Battalion before a crowd of 1,484 fans at the Powerade Centre. Scott Laughton and Christian Thomas had 2 points apiece in the loss. Daniel Altshuller made 39 saves in a game that also saw his goaltending winning streak snapped at 5.
Oshawa had a shaky start in the first period, they didn't really find their legs until mid-frame. Outshot 16-8 in the opening twenty, the Generals managed to escape only down by a goal.
Generals goaltender, Daniel Altshuller, was in the hot seat early. Faced with 5 shots in the first 2 minutes, he stood tall against a surging Battalion forecheck that was desperate for a goal. Altshuller did a superb job absorbing rebounds, cutting down angles and using his pads to plug the corners of the net.
Regrettably, the tidal wave was too much to shut down completely. Philip Lane cracked the dam beating Altshuller glove side from the slot at 3:42. A quick, short pass from behind the net gave Lane his opportunity, and he put Brampton up 1-0.
Scott Laughton was a lethal threat up front for Oshawa. On several occasions, he had Matej Machovsky sweating buckets in Brampton's goal. Laughton buried the equalizer at 12:56 after a beautiful saucer pass from Christian Thomas sprung him free. In all alone, Laughton dangled the puck with lacrosse-like proficiency. #21 finished the job by knifing a backhand that got up quicker than a kid on Christmas morning. The game was tied at 1.
Ian Watters restored Brampton's momentum roofing a goal scorer's goal with just 9 seconds remaining in the opening frame. Watters wired a loose puck from the high slot into the top right corner making it 2-1 Brampton. Oshawa entered the second period just 1 shot away from drawing even.
In the second, both teams honed their defensive zone coverage and looked to pounce on an opportune turnover. Lucas Lessio and Sebastian Uvira drove to the net with tropical storm intensity, but Machovsky weathered the onslaught and preserved the lead.
Altshuller continued to defy Brampton's attack when he stoned Barclay Goodrow who was in on a clear cut breakaway.
Unfortunately, the Generals struggled to close out the period. They succumbed to a Battalion 5-on-3 in the frame's final minute and headed to the dressing room down 3-1.
Oshawa hit the ice in the third period determined to keep their winning streak alive. They barraged Brampton's net with a bounty of shots, and at 3:44, Thomas tightened the noose by cashing in. Reversing their roles from Oshawa's first goal, this time, Laughton fed Thomas. #27 unleashed a rocket from the top of the circles that whittled the deficit to 3-2.
It's as close as the Generals would get. Moments later, Matt Macleod spoiled Oshawa's rally by sneaking in behind defensive coverage and beating Altshuller from point blank range. The comeback bid was further damaged when Brett Mackie threaded the puck into the net at 14:16. Brampton added 1 more on the power play, and when all was said and done, Oshawa's winning streak was halted at 5.
Catch the Generals at home this Friday January 13th when they welcome the Battalion for the back end of a home-and-home at the Generals Motors Centre. It's a 7:35 PM start.
