Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release

The Ottawa 67's certainly looked like the first place team in the Eastern Conference Sunday afternoon at the Hershey Centre.

Petr Mrazek made 29 saves for the shutout as the 67's solidified their hold on first place in the East with a convincing 4-0 win over the Majors, as Mississauga completed a busy weekend with three points in three games.

Tyler Toffoli, Shane Prince and newly acquired John McFarland all had a goal and an assist for the 67's, who out-shot the Majors 49-29, while Sean Monahan added the other Ottawa goal.

Brandon Maxwell was busy in goal for the Majors, making 45 saves, including all 22 he faced in the third period. The Majors slipped to 18-16-1-5 with the loss, but remained in eighth place in the East still two points ahead of Oshawa.

Mississauga General Manager/Coach James Boyd felt his team had a tough afternoon against an Ottawa team that is among the top clubs in the OHL at the moment after making some trades.

"Those two goals in the first period sucked the life right out of us," Boyd said. "We didn't play well enough defensively either for most of the game.

"They have some highly skilled forwards who are premier players and we just gave them too much time and space in front of our goal. They have a pretty solid team and if you don't stay on them, it's going to be tough to stop them."

Prince opened the scoring for the 67's just 1:29 into the game, slipping a shot past Maxwell to open the scoring. Monahan then nudged a shot under Maxwell at 12:45 to put the visitors ahead by two goals after one period of play.

The Majors kept the 67's in check for most of the second period until McFarland fired his 21st goal of the season past Maxwell at 16:14, and Toffoli added his OHL leading 33rd of the year at 18:33 to put Ottawa up by four goals after 40 minutes.

The teams played a scoreless third period, with Ottawa out-shooting Mississauga 22-10 in the final 20 minutes. Ottawa was 0-for-3 on the power play while the Majors failed to score in their three opportunities.

"I certainly like what I've seen from Maxwell so far," Boyd added. "He was very good in both his games this weekend."

The Majors now hit the road for a three-game swing next weekend, as the play Sarnia on Friday, in Plymouth on Saturday and in Saginaw Sunday afternoon. Next home game at the Hershey Centre is Friday, January 20 when they host the Brampton Battalion at 7:30 p.m.
