Oshawa Generals News Release

The Generals capped off their three-game weekend tonight against the Guelph Storm at the Tribute Communities Centre. After recording a massive 7-1 victory over the Bulldogs at home on Friday and falling to the IceDogs on the road yesterday, the Gens record sits at 20-11-2-0 on the season. Looking to finish off the weekend on a winning note, the Gens aimed to weather the Storm at home and grab the two points.

1st Period:

The Gens got off to a bumpy start, with Guelph Storm forward Keegan Stevenson capitalizing on a Generals turnover to open the scoring just two minutes into the game. Getting worse from there for the Gens, the Storm buried another opportunity just a minute later, putting them up 2-0 early. After the second goal, Oshawa got their chance to get on the board with the first powerplay of the game off a Storm tripping penalty. Making no mistake on the opportunity, the Gens potted a powerplay goal off a beautiful tic-tac-toe play between Danil Antropov, Allan McShane, and Serron Noel who sniped home his twentieth of the season. After scoring their first, Oshawa was next to take a penalty, putting the Storm up a man for two minutes. With some big saves from Gens starting goalie Aidan Hughes, Oshawa killed off the penalty to stay within one goal of Guelph. After the penalty expired, the Gens took another penalty immediately afterward, but were once again able to hold off the Storm. However, Guelph managed to score a goal following the penalties that was reviewed but deemed a good goal to give them a 3-1 lead. While the physical play ramped up as the period came to a close, no further goals were scored, sending the Generals into the first intermission down by two.

2nd Period:

The Gens opened the second period by taking an interference call to put them down a man. With a strong defensive effort, the Gens limited Guelph's offensive zone time and killed off the penalty. Back at even strength, Oshawa defenseman Mitchell Brewer ripped a shot from the point that got deflected by Anthony Salinitri and past the Storm goaltender to put the Gens within one at 3-2. Building off their second tally, the Gens kept the pressure on the Storm and were rewarded with the tying goal by Salinitri for his second in a row. Just minutes after things got tied up at three, the Storm surged back to get their fourth of the night and take back the lead at 4-3. With just over seven minutes remaining in the period, the Gens were called for a tripping penalty that they killed off to keep Guelph at four. However, at even strength with three minutes left in the period the Storm got a shot past the Gens through traffic to give them a 5-3 lead. With only one minute left in the period, a hit by the Storm caused a scrap to breakout and send each team to the box for two minutes and put the play at 4-on-4. With neither team scoring in the first minute of 4-on-4, the Gens headed into the third down 5-3.

3rd Period:

The period opened with a minute of 4-on-4 play that neither team scored on. After both club's players returned from the box, the Gens scored their fourth off a scramble play in front of the net that saw William Ennis chip the puck home. However, the one-goal difference was short lived after Guelph got one back immediately after Oshawa's tally, putting them up 6-4. At just over six minutes into the period, the Gens got a powerplay from a hooking call to the Storm. Although they had a few good looks on net, Oshawa wasn't able to get back within one goal of Guelph on the chance. After the powerplay attempt, the Gens took a penalty of their own to put them down a man. The penalty kill proved to be a successful one for Oshawa, as Serron Noel connected with Anthony Salinitri on a 2-on-1 shorthanded rush that saw Salinitri pot his hattrick goal. The hattrick was Salinitri's second three-goal performance in the past three games and his twenty-first goal of the season. After the Gens goal, the Storm were once again able to rebound and score a goal of their own, putting them up 7-5 with under eight minutes left in the game. In the last few minutes of the third, the Gens made one last effort to tie the game with their net empty, but the Storm put in their eighth of the night to give Oshawa an 8-5 loss.

After a tough loss tonight, the Gens will enter their holiday break with their next home games coming on Sunday, December 30th against the Ottawa 67's and on January 1st vs. the Kingston Frontenacs.
