Generals Winning Streak Goes to Five
December 21, 2002 - ECHL (ECHL)
Greensboro Generals News Release
Greensboro, NC â The Greensboro Generals erased an early 2-0 deficit to defeat the Richmond Renegades 3-2 in a shootout on Saturday night. The win was the fifth in a row for the Generals, tying a franchise record and moving them just one point behind the first place Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies for the division lead.
It didn't look good for Greensboro early on, as Richmond leapt in front on goals from Peter Hogan and Justin Plamondon just over eight minutes into the game. However, Chris Bell got the Generals on the board just 22 seconds later, cutting the margin to 2-1. From there, the goaltenders took over.
The two teams combined for a staggering 100 shots, with the Generals posting 60 of them, but both Marc Magliarditi of Richmond and Greensboro's Jamie Hodson stopped everything that came their way until midway through the third period. However, Generals' defenseman Geno Parrish found one small chink in Magliarditi's armor, scoring with 9:43 remaining on a slap shot in the slot and sending the game to overtime.
The Generals had a chance to win the game in the opening minute of overtime with a penalty shot, but Magliarditi's glove save on Mark Turner kept the Renegades alive, ultimately moving the game to a shootout. The Generals dominated from there, outscoring the Renegades 3-0 to earn the victory.
The Generals don't play again until Friday, December 27 when they host the Lexington Men O'War at 7:30. The Generals also host the Charlotte Checkers on December 28 at 7:30, with the Generals taking home the Carolina Cup for the first time ever if they win that game in regulation. Ticket prices range from $10.00 - $17.00, with tickets as low as $8.00 for students and seniors. Generals Flex Plans for six, twelve, and 18 games are also available for as little as $50.00.
