Generals Top M-Braves with Two-Run Ninth

PEARL, MS -- The Jackson Generals plated two runs in the top of the ninth to break a 1-1 tie and defeat the Mississippi Braves 3-1 at Trustmark Park Friday evening. The series continues with game three of five Saturday at 6:00 PM.

Mississippi (1-1, 40-31) scored one run on eight hits. Jackson (1-1, 32-39) plated three runs on just six hits. Elmer Reyes led the M-Braves offensively with a 3-for-4 night at the plate. Patrick Kivlehan collected two hits for the Generals.

The Generals took a 1-0 lead in the second. Kivlehan doubled and Kevin Rivers singled to put runners at the corners with no outs. Dario Pizzano then grounded into a double play, allowing Kivlehan to score the game's first run.

Mississippi tied the game at 1-1 in the sixth. Jose Peraza singled and stole second. Cedric Hunter then followed with a RBI-single to right field.

Jackson took a 3-1 lead in the top of the ninth. Jack Marder sand Ketel Marte reached on back-to-back singles to start the inning. A sacrifice bunt allowed both runners to advance before Julio Morban was intentionally walked to load the bases. Kivlehan and Leon Landry followed with RBI-singles to put the Generals out front.

Richard Vargas (1-1) worked two-thirds of an inning, walking one and striking out one to pick up the win. Mayckol Guaipe (S, 5) came on in the ninth to record his fifth save of the season. Ryne Harper (3-3) gave up two earned runs on four hits and a walk. He struck out one and suffered the loss.

Neither starter factored in the decision. Aaron Northcraft started and worked three innings for the Braves. He gave up one earned run on two hits while striking out one batter. Stephen Landazuri held the Braves to just three hits in four frames. He struck out three.

The M-Braves send right-hander Williams Perez (3-3, 1.93) to the hill in game three of this five-game series against the Generals. Jackson counters with righty Victor Sanchez (3-2, 4.06). First pitch is slated for 6:00 PM. Gates open at 5:00 PM.
