Oshawa Generals News Release

The Oshawa Generals closed out their home double header tonight against the Kingston Frontenacs at the Tribute Communities Centre. The Gens entered the game with a 7-5-1-0 record after ending their four-game win streak last night in a close 3-2 loss to the Kitchener Rangers. Oshawa looked to get back to their winning ways tonight and take down the Fronts in front of the hometown crowd.

1st Period:

The Gens came out of the gate strong, putting pressure on the Frontenacs and generating lots of offensive zone time. Their efforts were rewarded when Kyle MacLean potted his sixth goal of the year off a deflection to give the Gens an early 1-0 lead. The play went back and forth after the goal, with the shots favoring the Gens 7-6 just past the halfway mark of the period. The Gens ramped it up again in the latter half of the first, with the best chance on net coming off a one-time shot from Kyle MacLean that was stopped by Fronts goaltender Brendan Bonello. Continuing their strong play, Matt Brassard nearly added to Oshawa's lead after taking a rocket shot from the point that hit the post. With just over two minutes left in the period, the Gens got sent to the box for a delay-of-game penalty. With a strong penalty kill and some key stops from Gens goalie Kyle Keyser, Oshawa held off the Frontenacs powerplay and took their 1-0 lead into the first intermission.

2nd Period:

The period began with both teams getting some offensive zone time, but the Gens were able to capitalize on theirs with Ty Tullio chipping in a rebound to increase Oshawa's lead to 2-0. The goal was Tullio's third of the season, with assists going to William Ennis and Nando Eggenberger. With just over twelve minutes left in the period, Kingston got called for a tripping penalty to give the Gens a powerplay. While Oshawa came close to scoring when Serron Noel tipped a shot off the crossbar, they weren't able to add to their lead on the man advantage. Just after the eight-minute mark in the period, Kingston got on the board with their first of the game, putting them within one of the Gens. Right after the goal, Oshawa was sent to the box for a slashing call, but with another strong PK performance from Keyser and the Gens they held off the Fronts. After the penalty expired, Jack Studnicka was sprung on a breakaway that he was hooked on, resulting in a powerplay for the Gens. However, the Frontenacs had a two-on-one shorthanded chance during their penalty that Kyle Keyser made an incredible stretching save on to keep the Gens up 2-1 heading into the third period.

3rd Period:

The period opened with a penalty call to the Frontenacs for kneeing. The Gens had a few good looks on the powerplay but weren't able to put one in. Shortly after the penalty, Kyle MacLean put a pass in front of the net that was deflected in by Serron Noel to give the Gens a 3-1 lead. The tally added to Noel's team lead in goals with his eleventh on the season. Oshawa continued to pressure the Fronts through the first half of the third, generating lots of shots and some good chances. Just past the nine-minute mark, the Gens took a penalty for interference to put them down a man. Oshawa had a huge penalty kill effort that saw both Serron Noel and Jack Studnicka get shorthanded breakaways. While Noel's chance was saved, Studnicka slid his past the Fronts to put the Gens up 4-1. Shortly after Oshawa's penalty expired, Kingston was able to answer the Gens and get a goal back to put the game at 4-2. With three minutes left in the game, Oshawa took a delay-of-game penalty. The Frontenacs pulled their goalie on the powerplay to give them a two-man advantage, but the Gens shut the door and added an empty net goal from Matt Brassard to come away with a 5-2 win.

With a big win against the Frontenacs tonight, the Gens will look to carry the momentum into their next game on Thursday when they take on the Peterborough Petes on the road.
