Oshawa Generals News Release
The Oshawa Generals opened their double header at home tonight against the Kitchener Rangers at the Tribute Communities Centre. The Gens entered the game with a 7-4-1-0 record after picking up four straight wins, with the most recent victory coming on the road yesterday against the Bulldogs. Oshawa looked to extend their winning streak to five games in tonight's special First Responders Night!
Tonight's First Responders Night opened with a special ceremony from the Durham Regional Police Pipes and Drums Band, along with members of the Oshawa Fire, Brampton Fire and Region of Durham Paramedics Services Honour Guard!
1st Period:
The game began with a stretch of pressure from the Rangers, but Gens goalie Cole Ceci was sharp early on. However, Kitchener was eventually able to capitalize on a chance to give them an early 1-0 lead. At the halfway mark of the period, the Gens were being outshot 10-1 by the visiting team, with Kitchener controlling most of the play. The Gens first quality chance of the game came with just four minutes left in the first, after Serron Noel passed the puck in front of the Rangers net from the corner to Eric Henderson who slid the puck just wide. Kitchener took a tripping penalty against the Gens shortly after the chance, putting Oshawa on the powerplay with three minutes remaining in the period. The Gens nearly scored on the man advantage after Henderson tipped a point shot that trickled behind Rangers goalie Luke Richardson before being swept out of the crease. After the penalty had expired, Ty Tullio made an incredible rush with just five seconds left in the period in which he flew by the Rangers defender to get in alone and shoot the puck past the goaltender for a beautiful goal. With Tullio's second tally of the season, the Gens headed into the first intermission tied 1-1.
2nd Period:
The second period began similar to the first, with the Rangers getting the majority of the offensive zone time. After about five minutes through the period, the Gens began to fight back and kept Kitchener pinned in their end for a big shift. The pressure nearly resulted in a goal from Kyle MacLean, who slid the puck just wide of the net on a quality scoring chance. With just over twelve minutes left in the period, the Gens received a penalty call for interference, putting them on the penalty kill. The Rangers made the most out of the opportunity and shot one past the Gens to give them a 2-1 lead. With eight minutes left in the period, defenseman William Ennis made a great defensive play to deny a Rangers breakaway. Shortly after, Oshawa took a penalty that resulted in another powerplay goal for Kitchener, putting them up 3-1. The Gens received a powerplay of their own with five minutes left in the second. While Oshawa had some good looks on net during the man advantage, they weren't able to get one past the Rangers, leaving them down by two to finish the second period.
3rd Period:
The Gens began the period with a few shots on the Rangers net, one being a quality opportunity from the slot by Nando Eggenberger that was stopped. The Gens built off the chance and continued to pressure Kitchener with lots of shots early on. Just under fourteen minutes into the period, Kyle MacLean was sprung on a breakaway where he put a shot just over the net. Just after the chance, the Gens received a powerplay off a Rangers interference call. While they weren't able to score on the man advantage, Kyle MacLean potted a tap in goal right after the powerplay on a pass from Danil Antropov to bring the Gens within one of the Rangers. With just under seven minutes left in the game, Cole Ceci came up with a huge glove save to keep Oshawa's hopes alive. Unfortunately, despite a strong last-minute effort by the Gens with their net empty, they weren't able to score the tying goal and would fall to the Rangers 3-2.
The Generals will look to rebound from tonight's loss and get back to their winning ways when they close out their double header at home tomorrow night against the Kingston Frontenacs.
