Oshawa Generals News Release

Oshawa, ON - The Hockey Canada announced today that Generals forward Phil Tomasino has been named to Canada's National Junior Team Sport Chek Summer Development Camp.

Tomasino was selected by the Predators in the first round (24th overall) of the 2019 NHL Entry Draft in Vancouver. The 6-foot, 181-pound forward, just finished his third Ontario Hockey League (OHL) season, appearing in 62 games totalling 100 points (40 goals, 60 assists) between Oshawa and Niagara. He reached the 40 goal and 100 point markers for the first time in his career, leading the Generals and finishing fourth in league scoring.

The high-skilled playmaker tallied 72 points (34 goals, 38 assists) in 67 games with Niagara last season, his second OHL campaign. Compared to his rookie season in 2017-18 (5 goals, 19 assists), he posted improvements of 48 points and 29 goals, the latter of which was the highest increase in the entire CHL. Tomasino led the OHL in game-winning goals with 12 during the 2018/19 season. In October of 2019, he signed an entry-level contract with the Predators.

Previously with Hockey Canada, Tomasino has represented his country on the international stage at the World U17 Hockey Challenge and the U18 World Championship. Last summer with Hockey Canada, he was invited to this same development camp, making this invite his second time attending. The past season, he appeared in both CHL Canada Russia Series games versus team Ontario Hockey League, a team filled with the OHL's top talent.

"There's not much I can say, Phil's play speaks for itself. He is being recognized for his 100 point season and deservingly so. He is an offensively skilled player and would be a great asset to a Team Canada roster," said Vice President and General Manager, Roger Hunt on the announcement of Phil to the camp. "The Development Camp with Hockey Canada is a great experience for players and is a natural progression for someone like Phil, who has represented Canada before at an Under 17 and Under 18 level."

"It's always great to be associated with Hockey Canada and I am honoured to be named to this camp," said Tomasino on finding out the news. "With it being held virtually, it will be a new experience for everyone but excited but be a part of it."

The National Junior Team Selection Camp will be held July 27th-31st virtually this year due to the on going COVID-19 pandemic. Topics for virtual sessions will include at-home strength and conditioning plans, mental performance plans and check-ins, nutrition, dry-land skills, skating simulations, team-building activities, short-term international competition preparation and meetings with coaching staffs.
