Generals Fall to the Bulls in a Shootout
December 4, 2013 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Oshawa Generals News Release
Coming off a loss to the Kingston Frontenac's last Sunday, the Oshawa Generals were looking to rebound against another East Division rival in the Belleville Bulls.ÃâàThe loss last Sunday stopped the Generals from completing a perfect weekend after road wins against the Plymouth Whalers and Saginaw Spirit.ÃâàOn the other side of the puck, the Belleville Bulls have struggled this season and sat last place in the East Division with 16 points after 28 games played coming into Wednesday night's contest. ÃâÃÂ
The Generals came out to prove a point in the first period firing 17 shots at Belleville goaltender Charlie Graham, the Belleville net minder was up for the challenge and turned aside all 17 shots he faced.ÃâàÃâàOshawa goaltender Kenny Appleby was also busy in his second game starting since coming back from an injury; Appleby stopped all nine Belleville shots and showed why he has been ranked on the Central Scouting Services as a player to watch in the month of November.
After a scoreless first period, the goaltending battle continued into the second, this time it was Belleville leading the charge offensively.ÃâàThe Bulls finally broke the scoreless game six minutes and fifty-five seconds into the period as Remi Elie deflected a shot in front of Appleby.ÃâàIt took almost ten minutes for the Generals to strike back as Josh Sterk made a wonderful pass over to Jacob Busch who beat Graham for his fourth goal of the season.ÃâàTwenty-five seconds later Jimi Kuronen was able to put the Generals up 2-1 on a powerful slapshot from the point that beat Graham on the short side.ÃâàJust as the Generals were getting used to the lead Belleville defenceman Justin Lemcke would score his first OHL goal on a shot from the point to tie the game at two.ÃâàLemcke is a Whitby native who was drafted 18th overall in last year's Priority Selection. ÃâÃÂ
Belleville was able to keep the pressure on the visiting Generals into the third period and continued to fire at Appleby.ÃâàThe Oshawa net minder was forced to make some difficult saves over the period as most of the play was in the Generals end.ÃâàAfter twenty minutes, both teams could take the lead and the game was headed to overtime. ÃâÃÂ
The offensive play continued into the five-minute overtime as Josh Sterk and Belleville player Jordan Subban had the best chances for their respective teams.ÃâàAgain, the goalies prevailed and the game needed a shootout to settle the score.ÃâÃÂ
Oshawa's Michael Dal Colle missed his first attempt on Graham while Belleville's Cameron Brace made good on his attempt.ÃâàScott Laughton couldn't convert on a five hole attempt on Graham leaving the game on Subban's stick, he would beat Appleby through the five hole, winning the game for the Bulls.
The Generals return home to face the Peterborough Petes on Friday night at 7:35 PM.ÃâàSunday night the Bulls come to Oshawa to finish the home and home with a 6:05 PM puck drop.ÃâàSunday's game will be the 16th Annual Teddy Bear toss for the Generals! Bring those bears!!
