Generals End Steelheads Winning Streak

Brampton Steelheads News Release

The Mississauga Steelheads fell to the Oshawa Generals by a score of 5-3 on a frustrating night. Cole Carter's 34th of the season and goals in the final minute of both the first and second periods weren't enough to earn the Trout two points on the night.

Friday night's opening period in Oshawa was a lively affair. A tense first half of the first period was brought to life by Serron Noel, halfway through the frame. The Florida Panthers draft-pick poked a puck past a Steelheads defenceman, the play would catch Jacob Ingham in No Man's Land trying to decide whether to try to clear the puck or play the shot. Noel took advantage of the momentary indecision by poking the puck past the Steelheads netminder with one hand to put the Generals up by one. The Steelheads would find an answer through their captain shortly after, a hard forecheck by Callan Christner and CJ Clarke worked the puck to Cole Carter. Carter's 34th of the year whistled past the left shoulder of Kyle Keyser into the top right corner of the net. The score would, however, be even for only 11 seconds following the Carter goal, Noel was the culprit again as the Generals forward followed up on a rush and found a puck that sat up perfectly in the slot for the forward to hammer into an empty net for his 32nd of the year. The Trout would however refuse to go to the dressing room down a goal, some incredible patience from Liam Ham drew Kyle Keyser well out of his crease, Ham then directed a shot-pass towards Richard Whittaker, his seventh tally of the season tied the game with only three seconds left on the clock. The teams would go into the intermission tied on the scoreboard 3-3 and in shots 12-12.

The Trout would earn a powerplay early in the second period but would be frustrated by a tenacious Generals penalty kill, only managing one shot while on the man-advantage. The Generals would strike through their hot-scorer Nando Eggenberger to take the lead moments later. The Swiss forward's 23rd of the season extended his goal-scoring streak to five games. The Generals would then have a chance to extend their lead further on a power play thanks to a hooking infraction by Ryan Wells. The Steelheads PK would successfully handle their sole duty of the night, thanks to multiple shot blocks and pass breakups by a committed group of Steelheads penalty killers. The successful kill would pave the way for another equalizing goal in the final minute of a period. It was Nicholas Canade this time, the forward-turned-defenceman would use his offensive instincts to jump up on the rush and get to a prime scoring area. His fifth marker of the year coming on a backhand finish off a nice feed from Nick McHugh. The Steelheads would lead the Generals 13-9 in the period and would go on to outshoot Oshawa 36-29 on the night and would head into the third still tied at three.

The final frame was a frustrating one for the Trout and in particular Cole Carter. The captain had the team's two best chances of the period following Matthieu Franche's goal to put the Gens in the lead. Carter would first receive a nice pass at the side of the net from Alan Lyszczarczyk just minutes after Franche's goal, his quick effort would ping off the post on the near side. After that, the best chance for the Steelheads to even the score would come during a passage of 4-on-4 hockey following penalties to Thomas Harley and Danil Antropov. The Steelheads would find themselves on a 3-on-1 and a cross-ice pass to Carter left the captain with a wide open cage to aim at. Carter had good wood and placement on the shot, but Kyle Keyser would make a miraculous crosse-crease full-splits save to maintain the Generals one-goal advantage. The Steelheads would have one more shot on the man-advantage with only 4 minutes remaining in the game. The opportunity was for not as Nicolas Mattinen would find the back of the Steelheads empty net from his own zone to secure a 5-3 victory for the Gens on the night.

Some notes from the game; Cole Schwindt's assist on Richard Whittaker's goal extended his already career-long point streak to five games. Liam Ham's two-assist game was his seventh multi-point outing of the season tying his career high set a year ago.

The Steelheads will get a chance to rebound from this defeat on Sunday at 2:00 PM in Kitchener against the Rangers.
