North Bay Battalion News Release
SARNIA, Ont. - Hugo Leufvenius scored two goals and added an assist to lead the Sarnia Sting to a 6-2 victory over the undermanned North Bay Battalion in Ontario Hockey League action Friday night.
Sean Josling scored two goals, including an empty-netter, and Nick Grima and Franco Sproviero each provided one goal and one assist for Sarnia, which has a won-lost-extended record of 25-28-7 for 57 points, third in the West Division and seventh in the Western Conference. Goaltender Ethan Langevin faced 29 shots.
Harrison Caines and Mitchell Russell scored for North Bay, which lost a third consecutive game and is 25-27-5 for 55 points, fourth in the Central Division and tied with the Peterborough Petes for seventh in the Eastern Conference.
Goaltender Christian Propp made 33 saves as the Battalion opened a three-game road trip before 3,503 at Progressive Auto Sales Arena.
The Battalion, which dressed 17 skaters, one below the limit, lost Luke Burghardt to illness during the game and, in the third period, Patrick Brown to an upper-body injury.
Grima opened the scoring on the power play at 3:13 of the second period off a pass from Jacob Perreault, who had two assists. Defenceman Grima connected from the left point against Propp, who was screened by Curtis Egert and Mitch Eliot.
Caines countered at 7:44 with his eighth goal of the season. From the deep slot to Langevin's right, he tipped a Simon Rose drive past the goaltender. Mat Hardwick earned his first point with the other assist in his third OHL game. Caines has three goals and two assists for five points in the last four games.
Leufvenius then struck for two goals, the first at 9:42 when he slammed home the rebound of a Grima shot. Leufvenius, following up on his own rebound, drove to the net and chipped the puck over Propp's glove at 13:33 for a 3-1 lead. The eventual winner was the Swedish import's team-leading 34th goal.
Sproviero, with his 20th goal, ripped a wrister from the top of the left circle over Propp's blocker at 1:59 of the third period, and Josling swatted the rebound of a Ryan McGregor shot into the net at 6:19.
Russell scored at 17:08, breaking in alone on Langevin and slipping the puck between the goaltender's pads. Rose and Cameron Peters earned assists on Russell's 11th goal of the season, his sixth since arriving via trade from the Owen Sound Attack.
Propp went to the bench for a sixth skater, and Josling finished the scoring into the vacant net at 17:59.
North Bay outshot Sarnia 14-6 in the scoreless, penalty-free first period. The Battalion's best chance came in the 18th minute when Hardwick was foiled by a sliding Langevin on an attempt to convert a Kyle Jackson pass on a backdoor play at the left post. Theo Calvas disrupted the hosts' best scoring opportunity by foiling a two-on-one rush by Leufvenius and Perreault in the ninth minute.
The Battalion visits the Windsor Spitfires at 7:05 p.m. Saturday. The game can be seen live in North Bay on YourTV Channels 12 and 700 and heard on Country 600 CKAT.
