Oshawa Generals News Release
The Generals entered the weekend tonight with a contest against the Mississauga Steelheads at the Tribute Communities Centre. Coming into the game with an incredible seven game winning streak, the Gens held a 37-18-3-0 record on the season. Looking to extend their victory streak to eight games, the Gens set their sights on a big win at home with the Steelheads in town.
1st Period:
The game began with the majority of play being held in the Gens end, with Oshawa goaltender Kyle Keyser playing solid early to shut down Mississauga's looks on net. The first quality scoring chance for the Gens came eight minutes into the period when Nando Eggenberger was sprung on a partial break in which Steelheads goalie Jacob Ingham made a save on his shot attempt toward the top corner of the net. At the period's halfway mark, Oshawa forward Serron Noel came streaking into Mississauga's end with speed before deking past the Steelheads defender and sliding the puck through Ingham to open the scoring and put the Gens up 1-0. Minutes later, Mississauga fought back to tie the game up with a top corner shot past Keyser. However, the tie didn't last long as Noel buried a loose rebound for his second goal of the game just seconds after the Steelheads tally to put the Gens back ahead at 2-1. While it looked like Oshawa would carry their lead into the intermission, the Steelheads managed to pot one past the Gens with only two seconds remaining in the period off a scramble play in front of the net, sending the two teams into the second period tied 2-2.
2nd Period:
The Steelheads came into the second period with energy and got an early chance on net off a cross-crease pass that was stopped by Keyser by stretching out to make an amazing save. Four minutes into the period, the Gens were called for a roughing penalty to give the Steelheads the game's first powerplay. With strong defensive play, Oshawa was able to kill off the infraction and keep the game tied. Just before the midway point of the period, Gens forward Ty Tullio carried the puck into Mississauga's end and fired a shot on net that Nando Eggenberger chipped in to regain their lead at 3-2. With seven minutes left in the period, the Steelheads received a penalty for hooking to give the Gens their first man advantage of the game but went unsuccessful on the powerplay attempt. Within the period's final minute, the Steelhead's set up a passing play that resulted in a shot on goal and a rebound that was buried by Mississauga defenseman Nicholas Canade to knot things up at 3-3 heading into the third period.
3rd Period:
In the first few minutes of the third, the Steelheads continued to throw pucks on net with Keyser coming up big to make the saves and keep the game tied. Five minutes into the period, the Gens sustained pressure in Mississauga's end that resulted in a point shot from Nicolas Mattinen that squeaked through Ingham and was buried in the crease by Matthieu Franche to give the Gens the go-ahead goal at 4-3. After the goal, both teams were called for two-minute minors to put the play at 4-on-4. With the extra space on the ice, the Steelheads made a nice passing play that resulted in a shot on net that Keyser had to slide over to and make an incredible splitting save to keep the Gens up by one. Back at 5-on-5, Anthony Salinitri came close to adding to Oshawa's lead on a wraparound opportunity that was just short of going into the net. With four minutes left in the third, the Gens took a penalty for high-sticking to put them on an important penalty kill. During the kill, the Steelheads pulled their goaltender to put the play at 6-on-4 but Gens defenseman Mattinen was able to flip the puck from his own end into Mississauga's net to seal the deal on a 5-3 win for the Gens.
After increasing their victory streak to an amazing eight straight games tonight by taking down the Steelheads, the team will look to keep the wins rolling when they finish off the weekend with a home game against the Saginaw Spirit on Sunday.
