Oshawa Generals News Release
Belleville, ON - October 5th, 2011 - Special teams and timely saves were the difference in Belleville Wednesday night. Despite peppering the Bulls' with nearly 40 shots, the Generals fell 4-2 in front of a crowd of 1,975 at the Yardmen Arena.
Generals goaltender Dan Altshuller got his 6th straight start and his second against the team that drafted him. In the first period, he was nothing short of spectacular. He made 14 saves, among them, a sprawling stick stop in the game's first minute. Other highlights included a brilliant two save effort on Belleville forward, Michael Curtis. Even more impressive, Altshuller had to find the puck through a defensive screen to make the stop.
Belleville's power play opened scoring when Bulls' Captain Luke Judson potted home a point shot rebound at 14:57.
Once again, the Generals demonstrated their resilience with four seconds left in the frame. Oshawa's Nicklas Jensen stripped Belleville defenseman Stephen Silas behind the net, swung out in front and ripped a wrist shot right by the outstretched glove of Bulls netminder, John Chartrand. At the end of the first, the score was even 1-1 and shots were even at 15 apiece.
The second was a period that could have easily slipped away from the Generals, but true to their character, Oshawa hung tough. The Bulls special teams continued to click when Dylan Corson beat Altshuller on the power play from point blank range. Judson banged in his second of the game, a four-footer from the top of the crease, putting Belleville up 3-1.
Generals Captain, Boone Jenner, got Oshawa right back in it with a powerplay marker at 15:58. Oshawa gained the zone and sustained solid pressure before Jenner fired home his third of the season, a rebound off of a Nick Quinn blast from the point.
Christian Thomas' hard luck continued when he dangled the puck nicely on a partial break, but he couldn't find a way to beat Chartrand who stayed square to the shooter. Oshawa went into the dressing room down 3-2 heading to the final period.
In the third, the Generals deserved better. The penalty kill kept Oshawa poised to tie the game, Oshawa just couldn't solve John Chartrand on a critical 5-on-3. Boone Jenner had Oshawa's best chance, a backhand in tight, but he couldn't get the puck over the Bulls goaltender who was down but not out. A shorthanded Belleville goal put the game out of reach, and Chartrand went on to make 37 saves in another stunning performance.
Oshawa outshot Belleville 39-38.
The Generals will play their next two games on the road including this Friday in Sarnia against the Sting at 7:00pm. Oshawa will wrap up their four game road trip against the Windsor Spitfires Saturday night at 7:05pm. Both games can be seen on Rogers TV Durham.
The Generals next home game is Thanksgiving Monday October 10th against the Kingston Frontenacs at the General Motors Centre. Start time is 2:05 PM.
Prior to puck drop, the Generals will be recognizing former Toronto Maple Leafs Great, Doug Gilmour, who will be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame next month. Tickets are now available at the General Motors Centre Ticket Office.
