Dayton Gems News Release

Heading into Wednesday night, the Dayton Gems (13-10-1) were a perfect 7-0-0 against the Fort Wayne Komets (6-15-1) this season. After a 4-2 loss to the Komets on Wednesday, that record against Fort Wayne now has a blemish.

The Gems allowed Fort Wayne to take 45 shots at the goal on the night. Of those shots, 21 came in the third period, which is when the Komets did all of their damage against Gems.

The Gems were able to jump out to a 1-0 lead in the second period thanks to a short-handed goal by Jonathan Ornelas. Matthew McCue and Nick Canzanello were each credited with an assist on the play.

There wasn't any scoring again until the third period when Fort Wayne's Chris Francis scored just a few minutes into the period to tie the game at 1-1. Neil Musselwhite then broke that tie with 13:50 remaining to give the Komets a 2-1 lead.

Brandon Naurato of the Gems was then able to knot the game up at 2-2. His goal at the 11:55 mark was assisted by Brett Lutes.

After that, Fort Wayne took over. Leo Thomas scored the go-ahead goal with 6:02 remaining in the game and Kaleigh Schrock sealed the 4-2 win up for the Komets with a shorthanded empty net goal at the end of the period.

The win snaps a two game winning streak for the Gems.

Dayton will now take a break for Christmas and will return to the ice on Dec. 26 to take on Fort Wayne. The home game at Hara Arena is slated to start at 5 p.m.

The Kettering Medical Center is proud to be the official title sponsor of the Gems for the 2010-11 season.
