Gems Cruise to 8-2 Win Over Tulsa

March 3, 2011 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Dayton Gems News Release

For the second time in three games, the Dayton Gems matched their season-high for goals scored in a game by defeating the Tulsa Oilers 8-2.

It's the third time this season the Gems have scored eight goals in game. The last time Dayton scored that number of goals was on Sunday, Feb. 27, when the Gems defeated Fort Wayne 8-0.

The 45 shots on goal for Dayton were the second most the team has recorded this season. Only on Feb. 25 did the Gems take more shots. On that date, Dayton recorded 59 shots against Evansville.

Mike Vaskivuo was the big scorer of the night. The forward scored in each period to record his second hat trick of the season.

Dayton didn't waste much time before it started scoring. Matt Miller started things off for the Gems by scoring midway through the first period. Vaskivuo scored a shorthanded goal with less than five minutes remaining in the period to give the Gems a 2-0 as they headed into the locker room at the first intermission.

The Gems wasted no time extending their lead in the second period. Matt Miller scored his second goal of the game at the 5:17 mark to make it a 3-0 game.

Not to be out-done by his teammate, Vaskivuo recorded his second goal of the game less than three minutes later to give the Gems a 4-0 lead.

After Tulsa's Braden Walls scored the Oilers' first goal of the game, Dayton's Nick Canzanello recorded his only goal of the game to give the Gems a 5-1 lead after two periods of play.

After Damian Surma and Brett Lutes scored in the third period, Vaskivuo scored his third goal of the game for the Gems en route to the 8-2 victory.

The Gems will wrap-up their three-game road trip with a game against Evansville on Friday night. The puck will drop at 8:35 p.m.

The Kettering Medical Center is proud to be the official title sponsor of the Gems for the 2010-11 season.
