Allen Rallies to Overcome 'Bugs

March 3, 2011 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release

ALLEN, TX - The Allen Americans scored the last four goals of the game, including an empty-netter with five seconds left, to hand the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs a 5-3 defeat Tuesday night at the Allen Event Center. The Mudbugs now stand at 28-23-3 as they dig in for a six-game homestand starting Friday against Laredo at the CenturyTel Center.

James DeLory, David Rutherford and Travis Clayton scored goals for Bossier-Shreveport, who led 2-0 after the first period and 3-1 midway through the second before Allen began to come back. Ryan Munce stopped 34 shots in the contest but suffered the loss in his second start as the Americans finished with a 39-24 edge in shots.

The ‘Bugs went on top seven minutes into the contest when James DeLory jammed in a second-chance rebound off assists from Justin Aikins and Brett Smith. The visitors extended their lead to 2-0 three minutes later when Andy Contois received a pass from Shane Hart and backhanded the puck toward the net before David Rutherford swooped in to put the rebound through Chris Whitley's five-hole for his 32nd tally of the year. The Mudbugs killed off two Allen powerplays to cap off the period and went to the locker room with a two-goal lead.

Allen got on the board when the ‘Bugs turned the puck over in their own zone early in the second period, allowing David Nimmo to make it 2-1 at 2:46. Bossier-Shreveport built the lead back to 3-1 when Travis Clayton scored his tenth goal of the season off a drop pass from Shawn Limpright just over three minutes later.

The Americans scored three goals on special teams to cap off the period however, starting with Colton Yellow Horn's shorthanded marker off another Allen steal that put the score at 3-2. Jonathan Zion and Judd Blackwater then notched powerplay goals at 12:41 and 18:39 respectively, tying the game and then giving the Amerks a 4-3 lead heading into the third.

The Mudbugs thought they had tied the game in the final stanza when Rutherford directed the puck into the net during a scramble in front, but the goal was waved off when the officials ruled that it was kicked into the net. That was as close as the ‘Bugs would come however, as Whitley totaled nine stops in the last 20 minutes to keep Allen on top before the empty-net goal by Jarret Lukin with five seconds remaining.

Ryan Munce (0-1-1) is still looking for his first Mudbugs victory despite looking good in both of his first two starts with the club. Chris Whitley (18-6-1) stopped 21 shots to earn the win for the Americans. Bossier-Shreveport went scoreless on just two powerplay chances in the game, while Allen finished 2 for 5.

The ‘Bugs will now prepare for a weekend tripleheader of home games as they play host to Laredo Friday at 7:05, Allen Saturday at 7:05 and Texas Sunday at 4:05 pm, all at the CenturyTel Center.
