Mallards Place Giosa on Injured Reserve, Sign Akins

MOLINE, Ill. (March 3, 2011)- The Quad City Mallards of the "AA" Central Hockey League today announced the Mallards have placed center Eric Giosa on 30-day injured reserve, have signed center Drew Akins, have activated right wing Zac Pearson from 10-day I.R. and have moved defenseman Tyler Kindle from 10-day to 30-day I.R.

Giosa, 26, has been sidelined by a finger injury suffered in the Mallards' win over the IceMen in Evansville Sunday night. Giosa, who scored and picked up an assist in that victory, leads the Mallards in goals (26), points (48) and plus/minus rating (+11).

Akins, a 25-year old rookie, played ten games earlier this season for the Gwinnett Gladiators in the ECHL. Last season the 5' 11", 185-pound Akins scored six goals and totaled 17 points in 40 games while serving as team captain as a senior at the University of Minnesota-Duluth. Over four years as a Bulldog, Akins scored 21 times and recorded 51 points in 153 games. As a junior in 2008-09, the Excelsior, Minnesota, native helped UMD to the Western Collegiate Hockey Association tournament title and a berth in the NCAA tournament.

Akins spent two years in the junior ranks- with the North American Hockey League's Santa Fe Road Runners in 2004-05 and with the United States Hockey League's Sioux Falls Stampede in 2005-06- before enrolling at Minnesota-Duluth.

Pearson, 27, missed the Mallards' last three games after suffering an upper body injury in the Flock's February 21 loss at Bloomington. Pearson has scored 20 goals and totaled 36 points in 52 games this season.

Kindle, 33, suffered an upper body injury in the Mallards' win last Saturday in Dayton. Kindle has scored six times and record 27 points in 49 games.

The Mallards next take to the ice tomorrow night on the road against the Missouri Mavericks. The Mallards next play at home Saturday at 7:05 p.m. against the Mavericks.
