Gems Blow Out Komets 6-1
October 9, 2010 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Dayton Gems News Release
Dayton, OH- The Dayton Gems bounced back from their 3-2 defeat in Fort Wayne on Thursday, by defending home ice and taking it to the Komets in every fashion on their way to a 6-1 victory in the final preseason game of the 2010-11 season. Repeating what the Komets were able to do to them the other night, the Gems jumped out of the gate to take a 2-0 lead at the end of the first period. The offense would not slow down in the second and they held onto a two-goal lead at the end of 40 minutes at 3-1. The third period was just a perfect display of team hockey as the offense pelted the Komets net with three more goals, thus ending in a 6-1 home victory.
After going 0 for 6 on the power play in Thursday night's game, the Gems made the necessary adjustments and were very successful with the man advantage, finishing the game going 2 for 7 on the power play. Fort Wayne scored their only goal of the game on the power play in the second, but outside of that small blemish the Gems did their job on the penalty kill, killing off the remaining four chances. Not to go unnoticed either was the stellar play in between the pipes by goaltenders Jeff Jakaitis and Derek MacIntyre, both combining to stop 30 of the Komets 31 shots. Knowing that a roster spot could be on the line by the end of the night, new Gems Ernie Stewart and Eric Boisvert did their part scoring a pair of goals each. Also helping the cause was rookie Tyler Czuba and returning Gem, Nathan Oke. In addition to scoring at will tonight, the Gems also brought their toughness to the ice and played a very physical game. Devin Guy (who fought once in Fort Wayne on Thursday) found himself in the middle of two more fights tonight. A great night overall for the team and the fans as the Gems look to use the momentum from tonight's win for next Saturday's season opener against Evansville.
