Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release

SOUTHAVEN, MS - The Mississippi RiverKings outscored the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs 2-1 in the shootout to finish off a 3-2 victory as the teams opened the preseason Saturday night at the DeSoto Civic Center.

David Rutherford scored once in regulation and again in the shootout and Jeff Harvey made 33 saves for the ‘Bugs in defeat. Bossier-Shreveport allowed only one powerplay goal in ten Mississippi man-advantages while finishing 0 for 2 on their own powerplay.

The RiverKings held the early shot advantage and got on the board first when Darrell Stoddard scored a powerplay goal just under six minutes in. Rookie forward Shane Hart answered for the Mudbugs later in the period off an assist from Jeff Martens and the game was tied at one after one.

Bossier-Shreveport controlled much of the second frame, outshooting Mississippi 17-9 and taking a 2-1 lead on Rutherford's early shorthanded tally from Steven Crampton and Jim Jorgensen. A few minutes after Martens and Mississippi's Russell Smith dropped the gloves in a fight, Ryan Kretzer scored to tie it for the ‘Kings.

The score stayed 2-2 through the third period and overtime until both Matt Summers and Jeff Christian tallied shootout goals to lift Mississippi to the win. Larry Sterling stopped 29 shots in his first game back with the ‘Kings as they outshot the ‘Bugs 36-31.

Bossier-Shreveport will conclude its preseason slate with another game against Mississippi tomorrow at 3:00 pm at the DCC. Online audio of the game can be heard through the RiverKings' flagship station at www.sports56whbq.com.
