Gelinas' Heroics Lead Wichita Past Mudbugs

Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release
BOSSIER CITY, LA - Goaltender Marc-Antoine Gelinas turned aside all 38 Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs shots, including 22 in the third period alone, to lead the Wichita Thunder to a 3-0 win Tuesday at the CenturyTel Center. The Mudbugs fall to 11-11-0 at home this year and 25-20-2 for the season after dropping their only meeting with the Thunder this year.
The ¬ËBugs fired shot after shot at Gelinas in the game, outshooting Wichita 22-0 in the third period only to be shut out for the third time this year. Bossier-Shreveport went scoreless on five powerplay opportunities while finished the night with a 38-18 shot advantage.
Both teams had scoring chances and both goaltenders made big saves in the first, but Wichita opened the scoring with a shorthanded goal at 5:14 as Aaron Davis tucked a rebound past John DeCaro. The ¬ËBugs outshot the Thunder 9-7 in the first 20 minutes, but trailed 1-0 heading into the locker room after Gelinas stopped Simon Mangos on a breakaway with just seconds left in the period.
The Mudbugs generated a number of quality chances in the second, including Jeff Martens hitting the post from the slot and Gelinas stopping a great doorstop opportunity from Jeff Kyrzakos. That kept Wichita on top 1-0 until Robin Richards snuck behind the defense and put the puck off the post and in at 14:18. Troy Schwab followed with less than two minutes left in the period to make it 3-0, finishing off a nice passing play after the ¬ËBugs turned the puck over just outside their zone.
Bossier-Shreveport peppered Gelinas (20-9-3) with 22 shots in last 20 minutes (not to mention the others that were blocked or deflected in front), but the 22-year-old rookie stopped every one on his way to setting Wichita ¬â¢s single-season record with his fourth shutout of the season. DeCaro (13-9-1) finished the night with 15 saves as his two-game winning streak ended. Both clubs finished 0 for 5 on the powerplay.
The Mudbugs will now look to start a new winning streak against the Evansville IceMen tomorrow night at 6:35 in a game that was re-scheduled from Friday, February 4 due to a snowstorm in Bossier-Shreveport. The ¬ËBugs will also host the Allen Americans at 7:05 pm Friday at the CTC.
