
Gathright Returns to Major Leagues

(Central Islip, N.Y., Sept. 13, 2011) - Joey Gathright served as a pinch runner and left fielder for the Boston Red Sox during their game on Tuesday, September 13, making the outfielder the tenth former Duck to make it back to the Major League level after playing on Long Island. Gathright joins Carlos Baerga, Bill Pulsipher, Nelson Figueroa, Pedro Borbon, Jr., Ken Ray, Mel Stocker, Jay Gibbons, Erick Almonte, and Robinson Cancel as Ducks that have made it back to the game's highest level after playing at the Duck Pond.
Gathright earned the promotion after hitting .375 in four games with Triple-A Pawtucket. He played in 38 games with the Ducks during the 2010 season and compiled a .269 batting average with three home runs and 19 RBI. The outfielder also scored 31 runs and stole four bases. His biggest highlight came on August 12 when he went 4-for-6 with four RBI at the plate, including a waddle-off single to right in a 7-6 win over Camden.
The 30-year-old has spent six seasons in the Major Leagues with four teams (Red Sox, Cubs, Devil Rays, Royals). Most recently, he split 2009 with the Red Sox and Cubs, combining to post a .267 average in 37 games. During his big league career, the Mississippi native has compiled a .263 average with 96 RBI and 80 stolen bases in 445 games. Gathright was originally drafted by the Devil Rays in the 32nd round of the 2001 amateur draft.
