Gateway Grizzlies News Release
WASHINGTON, Pa. - Grizzlies' starter Dillon Haviland and reliever Ross Spurgeon combined to blank the Washington Wild Things as the Grizzlies took the rubber game of a three-game set at CONSOL Energy Park on Sunday afternoon, 5-0.
Haviland (2-2) threw six scoreless frames while allowing just five hits en route to collecting his second professional win. The lefty grew up in McDonald, Pa. and went to high school just 30 minutes away from where he threw Sunday's gem.
Gateway's offense was unable to touch RHP Matt Fraudin (2-2) until the fifth inning, when Tyler Tewell blasted an opposite-field homer to left field. Tewell's fifth homer of the season gave the Grizzlies a 1-0 lead.
After Blake Brown doubled home another run in the sixth, Tewell went yard again in the seventh to put Washington (36-47) in a deeper hole. He pulled a pitch from Washington reliever Matt Purnell down the right field line for his second solo shot of the day. The Grizzlies (34-49) scored once more in the seventh to pull ahead 4-0.
In the bottom half of the seventh, Spurgeon came on to relieve Haviland and dazzled through three scoreless innings. The righty picked up his second save of the season while giving up only two hits.
Grant Buckner added to the lead in the eighth with his second solo home run of the series. The blast put the Grizzlies up 5-0.
Gateway's pitching staff shined during the series, allowing just five runs in three games.
After an off day on Monday, the Grizzlies return to action on Tuesday night at GCS Ballpark for the start of a three-game series against the Normal CornBelters. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m. The game can be heard on the Grizzlies Radio Network, which airs on 101 ESPN's digital platforms and 1400 AM KJFF. Sam Levitt will call the action.
